Essential Functions:
Provides day-to-day operational oversight for Outdoor Education and Recreation programs with a primary focus on Outing Club Adventure Center (Pavilion), Indoor Climbing Wall, Outing Club Barn, Challenge Course, Bike Shop, and Open Recreation in Duchossois Athletics and Recreation Center.
In consultation with the Director of Outdoor Education Programs, plans and executes the Appalachian Adventure pre-orientation program for first-year students. Coordinates with other Leading Edge programs as needed. Manages program logistics, including registration, transportation, facilities and equipment reservations. Administers and maintains trip leader and participant evaluations. Leads task and topic specific training workshops for student leader and crew positions.
Develops and implements Standard Operating Procedures for all areas of the department. Coordinates risk management database, department trainings, and internal risk reviews. Maintains all relevant documentation, including instructor and student leader certifications, training, informed consent(s)/waivers, incident reports, and other relevant records.
Organizes numerous department trips and recreational excursions for the University community including booking vendors and scheduling campus resources, equipment, transportation, food and lodging. Disseminates communication to all parties involved in trips including scheduling or logistical changes and post- activity follow up.
Schedules professional or work-study staff to cover specific programs including: internal departmental trainings, group activity requests, repetitive annual, weekly, or monthly activities.
Develops and communicates facility and program schedules for all locations as determined by budget, staffing availability, and recreational demand.
Oversees operating budgets. Completes all departmental ordering, program invoices payments, and receipt documentation in Workday. Manages all account balances including Henri’s Cabin, Outing Club Guidebook, the Blue Bike program, the University Bike Shop, and the Outing Club Equipment Rental Program. Assists with the allocation and management of Club Sport team funding.
Manages part-time employee and student scheduling and ensures time entry is completed by payroll deadlines. In consultation with the program managers for the Indoor Climbing Facility, Outing Club Equipment Rental Program, and University Bike Shop, ensures appropriate staffing, inventory, and facility/equipment maintenance.
Oversees Outdoor Education and Recreation Facilities and ensures appropriate maintenance and cleaning for each site. Submits work orders with Facilities Management staff for building repairs. Coordinates maintenance for Back Campus resources such as Henri’s Cabin, Trails, and the Disc Golf Course. Orders signs, tail head kiosk map maintenance, and organizing monthly volunteer trash clean-up projects.
Advises the student marketing team to create a comprehensive campaign to advertise all recreation programs (Outing Club trips, GroupEx classes, IM events/leagues, Club Sport practices). Primary responsibility for marketing Teambuilding/Challenge Course events, First Aid/CPR certification trainings, competitive recreational opportunities, campfire program, leadership or employment opportunities with department.
Recruits and mentors student-focused administrative management teams for each departmental function. Creates leadership, management, and hands-on learning opportunities for student employees. Encourages and supports student self-governance.
Facilitates trainings including: “On the Job” work-study employment, First Aid/CPR/AED, driver safety, facility opening/closing procedures, customer service and professionalism workshops, conflict and communication workshops, diversity and inclusion training, and peer-supervising workshops.
Coordinates operational aspects of the Outdoor Ed PE Classes including scheduling in 25Live, reserving Outing Club vehicles and trailers, and purchasing required federal and state access permits for the 3-4 physical education classes provided each term.
Seeks out collaborative opportunities with other campus organizations and departments including LEAD, OIE, Res-Life, Admissions, Alumni, Athletics, Law School, and Academic departments.
Monitors generic email addresses including [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]. Coordinate with student employee(s) responses and replies as needed over breaks and summer.

Work Schedule: Variable hours requiring occasional weekend and evening shifts.
Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma required and a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Environmental Education, or Physical Education is preferred. Willing and able to become an AMGA or PCIA Certified Climbing Wall Instructor. This position requires the incumbent to portray a high energy level and be an active and successful team member who easily interacts with and engages students, faculty, administrators, staff and alumni. Experience in recreational operations and marketing, as well as a proven passion for providing opportunities and exposure to recreational programs for students from diverse backgrounds is preferred. Experience in program management and/or instruction within a Challenge Course, Indoor Climbing Wall, Group Exercise, or Outdoor Education setting is advantageous.

Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.
Working Conditions:
The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
