The Materials & Process Designer is instrumental in the research, development, and implementation of the materials used in costumes across the enterprise. They will partner closely with Costume Designers, Digital Sculptors, internal and external vendors, and many more.
This position will report to the Manager – Costume Production.
This is a temporary role with no guarantee of permanent placement.
Function as in-house materials authority in comparing the attributes of both traditional materials (composites, plastics, etc.) and new materials (foams, etc.) during product design.
Handle confidential information pertaining to employees and intellectual property.
Coordinate testing of materials by outside contractors and the summarization and interpretation of test results.
Participate in materials selection decisions during the development process.
Prepare material performance specifications.
Research and identify outside contractors with shown capability to work with selected materials.
Act as a technical authority for the purchasing process for the external contracting of production manufacturing.
Provide technical consultation to manufacturing quality control for the manufacturing process in on-site manufacturing facilities and at external contractors.
Function as an individual contributor or a team lead as projects require.
3+ years of experience with a large variety of composites, plastics, foams, and similar materials
Reformulation, molding, lay-up, and crafting techniques experience
Human factors engineering and ergonomics experience
Experience communicating (both internal & external) with collaborators at all levels
Experience gaining consensus in a creative team where collaboration is key
Experience prioritizing multiple workstreams
Experience with the art of compromise and influence
Continuous process improvement experience
Experience turning raw client data and translating it for a specific audience
Experience in industry trend research
Ability to work around different types of fabrics, fibers, and furs
Willing to work outside regular business hours (nights, weekends, holidays) as needed
Ability to travel domestically up to 10% and internationally up to 5% of the time
Valid Passport
Experience with the following programs: Solidworks, eDrawing, Rhino, DesignX, Maya and/or Zbrush
Experience with rapid prototyping
Experience with various textiles
Alternative finishes experiences
Experience with themed entertainment
High school degree or equivalent is required
Advanced degree in Material Engineering or equivalent is preferred
