This position will manage the climbing wall and OP community events assist in managing areas of the OP program to include: wilderness trips program, and the Wilderness to Wake pre-orientation program. This position will collaborate with Campus Life partners especially the offices of Residence Life and Housing, Wellbeing, Student Engagement, Diversity & Inclusion, Sustainability, and Global Programs & Studies to promote student engagement and foster physical wellbeing by all members of the campus community. Lastly, this position will strive to foster an inclusive environment that seeks to serve a diverse campus community through actively developing and implementing strategies and programs to engage underrepresented populations in OP programs.Job Description
Essential Functions:
Climbing Wall
Manages the operations of the climbing wall. Responsible for oversight of day to day business operations, inventory management, facility upkeep, and customer service.
Responsible for the training, scheduling, and evaluation of climbing wall staff.
Facilitates a rock climbing leader trainings throughout the school year.
Monitors and assists with the risk management plans for all climbing related programming.
Trips & Programs
Responsible for assisting the assistant director in development of the trips program and student trip leader training for wilderness-based activities such as backpacking, rock climbing, white and flat water paddling, etc.
Develop and implement on-campus “OP Community Events” through providing guidance to student employees in the creation of outdoor pursuits related community events for campus constituents and working with outside groups to deliver periodic wilderness based classes, lectures, movies, and events rooted in participant education in a variety of topics.
Assist with the planning and delivery of the Wilderness to Wake pre-orientation program
Lead occasional field-based wilderness trip potentially lasting for multiple days.
Administration
In conjunction with the Campus Rec student marketing team, ensures the development and implementation of a robust marketing plan for OP offerings through a variety of marketing media.
Aids with oversight of operational budgets related to OP programs and ensure accountability for program expenditures.
Other Functions:
Assist with bike share fleet maintenance and bike distribution at the beginning and end of each semester.
Develop and implement collaborative opportunities with the Office of Sustainability to continue OP’s efforts to serve the sustainability efforts and projects of Wake Forest University.
Provide support for Campus Recreation facilities, programs and special events.
Other duties as assigned by department administrators.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Bachelor’s degree in experiential education or other related field accompanied by a minimum of 1 – 2 years of professional experience working in backcountry settings in a leadership role (Graduate Assistant work does apply).
Demonstrated knowledge of outdoor recreation and rock climbing.
Supervisory experience of staff and participants in backcountry locations.
First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
Wilderness First Responder certification or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
Experience working as a guide or similar designation in backcountry environments.
Documented outdoor trip planning and leadership experience in a variety of adventure activities.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with diversity and inclusion initiatives as they relate to outdoor adventure programming.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with administration, planning, assessment, and implementation of outdoor program staff training.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Master’s degree in outdoor education or higher education administration.
Outdoor recreation program management experience in an educational setting.
Ability to obtain an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor certification within a year of employment.
Ability to obtain an Mountain Bike Instructor certification within a year of employment.
Involvement in industry associations such as AORE, NIRSA, ACA.
Instructional experience with Outward Bound, NOLS, or similar program.
Accountabilities:
Works with minimal supervision, reports to the Assistant Director of Outdoor Pursuits.
Work requires contact with department and University staff, students, and vendors.
Addresses risk management concerns related to outdoor programs.
Supervisor responsibilities for student employees.
Expected to regularly work nights and weekends
