Essential Functions:
Provides vision, leadership and administrative oversight of non-clinical Case Manager staff that delivers caring outreach and support to students, faculty and staff experiencing personal, medical, or mental health-related crises.
Manages high acuity cases to provide case management services and coordinated resources to students identified as high-risk by health, safety, and wellbeing measures and high-impact, complex students of concern, defined as those who are at risk of harming themselves or others, experiencing significant disruption in their academic study due to the presence of psychiatric, behavioral, and/or mental health related issues, and/or presenting with behaviors that may be worrisome to others and disruptive to University business/community stability.
Provides consultation to campus constituents (parents, families, students, faculty, and staff) and triages concerns that are reported to CARE and Case Management which are related to the health, safety, and well-being of undergraduate and graduate students.
Provides case management services to students who are beginning and navigating their continuous enrollment status periods.
Supports the development of programming and outreach that enriches the University’s Chinese students’ educational, social, and cultural experiences as aligned with the supervision of the Chinese Student Life Coordinator.
Serves as co-chair of the Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment Team (CARE Team) and a primary point of contact for the WFU community regarding persons of concern and/or potential threats to the health, safety, and general welfare of members of the community.
Oversees CARE Team operations and activities including maintenance of CARE system data and reporting, documentation of weekly and ad hoc meetings, regular trainings on- and off-campus, review of Team process, and annual retreat/strategy meetings.
In times of student crisis intervention, responds as member of the Student Incident Team (SIT), Threat Assessment Team and as part of an Administrator-On-Call rotation.
Coordinates the Biased Incident Report System (BIRS), which provides caring outreach and support to individuals that experience identity-related bias, evaluates incidents to reduce the possibility of future harm, reports trend data to university leaders and members of the community, and coordinates educational outreach about bias support and identity-related harm.
Coordinates a team of students, faculty, and staff which acts to promote, protect, and support open expression and inquiry across campus; responds to campus events, incidents, protests, activism, and concerns with caring and consistent support for expression, inquiry, and education; encourages a focus on civility, inclusion, and a fundamental respect for all community members; designs educational initiatives and resources that support increased individual and community capacity for navigating the intersection of open expression and inclusion.
Develops and implements strategic plans and program/learning assessment initiatives for the Case Manager program, BIRS, CARE Team, and Student and Community Support Team to reflect the volume and complexity of the concerns managed and intervention/response. The Associate Dean will utilize results to effectively communicate the value of these systems in the community and to assist in strategic decision making.
Coordinates the development, provision, and assessment of educational initiatives in areas that include, but are not limited to the identification, referral and/or reporting of community members experiencing personal, medical, or mental health crises, potential threats to the health, safety, and wellbeing of the community and its members, incidents of identity-related bias, and potential conflicts between the free expression of ideas and dissent.
Monitors budgets for assigned areas of responsibility and seeks grants and/or new funding opportunities that will enhance student services.
Co-lead the development of a student curriculum, and develop the corresponding assessment measures, centered on recognizing common signs and symptoms that suggest someone may be struggling with their mental health, practicing health-promoting behaviors, practicing listening and conversation skills, and referencing and connecting self and others to relevant campus and national support services.
Other Functions:
Stays current on campus and national trends in the areas of behavioral intervention, threat assessment, biased incident response, and issues involving the intersection of free expression and inclusion, individual or group bias, and standards of behavior in a higher education setting. The Associate Dean is responsible for incorporating this information into training and routine system review.
Partner with a wide constituency group on- and off-campus, including students and families, faculty, staff, law enforcement, and medical/mental health care providers.
Serve on a variety of committees within the Office of the Dean of Students, Division of Campus Life and the university community. Participate in all department professional activities.
Serve as a member of the Dean of Students leadership team.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Master’s degree in social work, counseling, student affairs administration, or similar field.
Seven to ten years of relevant experience in a higher education setting, including progressive management responsibilities.
Ability to assess information regarding potential threats and/or persons of concern.
Ability to interact with students, parents/guardians, staff, and faculty of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and work well in a team-oriented environment.
Ability to professionally and appropriately manage sensitive, private material and information.
Knowledge, experience, and comfort managing concerns related to personal, medical, and mental health issues.
Understanding of and ability to adhere to strict privacy restrictions.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Doctorate in social work, counseling, student affairs administration, or similar field.
Knowledge of risk factors and warning signs related to targeted violence and experience with threat assessment in higher education a plus.
Ability to synthesize and summarize large amounts of information, document information electronically in a timely manner, and verbally communicate with appropriate stakeholders as warranted.
Ability to effectively communicate and develop partnerships throughout the campus and local community about area resources to constituency groups.
Demonstrated experience in assessment and evaluation.
Knowledge of current regulations relevant to work in higher education (i.e., Title II, III, & IX; FERPA; HIPAA; etc.).
Proven ability to promote collaboration, teamwork, and involve stakeholders in the decision-making process.
Sensitivity and awareness to the needs of diverse student populations and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and the academic, intellectual, and social development of all students.
Accountabilities:
This position reports to the Dean of Students and Associate Vice President for Campus Life.
Supervises two Case Managers and a Coordinator for Chinese Student Life.
