Job Description
Virginia Tech’s Department of Entomology seeks to attract a highly qualified person to help mass rear and process collected predators of the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid. These predators are used in an operational release, recovery, and evaluation program for the biological control of this pest throughout the eastern US. One set of primary tasks will be to maintain cleanliness and organization of insectary facility conducive to the mass rearing of HWA predators; care for all life stages of predator colony (on weekends and holidays when necessary); carry out procedures to maximize predator production; collect and maintain scientific data in Excel format; analyze research data related to the project, and periodically provide reports on Insectary operations and productivity. A second but equally important set of tasks will be to conduct molecular testing, (DNA extraction, PCR, RFLP, sequencing, and microsatellite protocols) to identify recovered predators from collaborators throughout the region. A third aspect of the job is to provide general support to the forest entomology research program, which includes both lab and field assistance as needed
Required Qualifications
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; Ability to complete repetitive tasks with efficiency and accuracy; and Ability to operate a motor vehicle with a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with insects in the lab and in the field; Rearing predatory beetles and flies; Strong written and oral communication skills, Ability to analyze experimental data, and write reports and contribute to or coauthor research papers.
