Virginia Commonwealth University Looking for Laboratory Research Technician Full Time

Summary:

The Philips Institute for Oral Health Research in the department Oral and Craniofacial Molecular
Biology, School of Dentistry is seeking applicants for a full-time Laboratory Research Technician to join a team of researchers employing
molecular biological, microbiological, and metagenomic approaches as well as in vivo models to investigate helpful and harmful properties of
oral bacteria.

Position Responsibilities:

This position supports the activities of two collaborating
laboratories working on a joint project to investigate the virulence of an oral streptococcal species for infective endocarditis with the
goal of preventing disease while maintaining desirable oral colonization. The position involves experimentation and laboratory management
duties, the exact mix of which will depend on the qualifications and experience of the chosen candidate. The main duties include the
following:

• Inventory management: Order all items required for research experiments as needed, assist in maintaining and
  replenishing common chemicals and reagents as needed and complete all training required to maintain purchasing privileges
• Laboratory
  Safety: Perform all duties required of Chemical Hygiene officer, including yearly CHP update, dispose of all chemical and biological waste
  in compliance with university and OSHA regulations, replace items in first aid and spill kits as needed, assist in arranging for required
  inspections of equipment and maintain certification for shipping of hazardous materials
• Animal experimentation: Provide assistance
  to a group of scientists, animal care professionals, and medical specialists who are committed to best practices in animal research,
  complete all training required to work with a USDA-regulated species, prepare required instruments and supplies and assist with
  pre-procedure preparation and post-procedure monitoring
• Laboratory experimentation: Perform laboratory experiments as requested,
  present and discuss data in lab meetings, maintain laboratory notebooks recording the experiments and prepare scientific data for
  manuscripts
• Human subjects research: Obtain and maintain human subjects training required for saliva collection through an existing
  IRB-approved protocol

Required Qualifications:

• BS in the field of biology, microbiology,
  chemistry, molecular biology or a related field or equivalent experience
• Must be self-motivated, eager to learn, and
  reliable
• Must be detail oriented
• Must have strong verbal and written communication skills
• Must have excellent
  organizational skills
• Must be completely committed to the humane treatment of animals
• Must have demonstrated experience
  working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior experience ordering and purchasing supplies
• Prior
  experience working in a research laboratory performing microbiology or molecular biology experiments

Salary Range:
