The University of Virginia invites applications for an exciting opportunity in the Division of Student Affairs. The University’s mission to develop engaged citizen-leaders is the foundation of the Division’s work, which is guided by six core values – academic rigor, diversity and inclusion, health and wellness, honor, public service, and student self-governance. The Division consists of over 200 employees within five units — the Office of the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer, the Office of the University Dean of Students, Student Health & Wellness, the University Career Center, and the Office of African-American Affairs – all working together, for and alongside students, to create the distinctive student experience for which UVA is known. The Division is recruiting a Deputy Coordinator of Judicial Affairs within the Office of the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer who will report to the Assistant Vice President (AVP) responsible for overseeing Judicial Affairs, Critical Incident Management, and Policy/Compliance.
The Deputy Coordinator will provide programmatic support for the student-run Honor and Judiciary Committees. As two of the most storied and active institutions of student self-governance at the University, the Honor and Judiciary Committees have delegated authority from the Board of Visitors to investigate and adjudicate allegations of student misconduct within their respective jurisdictions. The Deputy Coordinator will assist the AVP in advising and supporting these Committees, including assistance with case issues and questions, training initiatives, securing resources for Committee members, and helping Committee leaders resolve problems and respond to challenges and/or crises. In addition to this important advisory work, the Deputy Coordinator will also manage ancillary functions for the Judicial Affairs area including preparation for Contributory Health Impairment (CHI) hearings and the AVP’s review of CHI appeals, interim suspension appeals, and cases referred to Student Affairs by the Judiciary Committee.
The Deputy Coordinator will provide daily operational support for the Committees and Judicial Affairs area. Responsibilities will include frontline engagement with students, parents, and faculty regarding Committee concerns and business, assistance with scheduling and facility needs, review of financial reimbursements and budget questions, and general logistical support. The Deputy Coordinator will also help the Committees with data tracking and analysis involving case metrics/trends, student surveys, peer benchmarking studies, and other initiatives.
In addition to work with the Committees, the Deputy Coordinator will assist the AVP with critical incident planning, management, and response for the Student Affairs Division. Examples include providing training to the Division’s units and staff, serving as the AVP’s back-up for critical incident management in the University’s Incident Assessment Group and University Operations Center, and liaising with student and staff leaders regarding critical incident safety and preparedness.
