Facilities Management at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for our highly regarded Apprenticeship Program. The Apprenticeship Program began in 1982 and was the first Apprenticeship Program initiated by a state agency. This unique program provides an opportunity to learn a trade while working full time at UVA. Apprentices support Facilities Management’s goal of providing consistent, cost effective, efficient, and reliable maintenance and service to the University’s facilities. These employees are trained through the apprenticeship program with the goal of becoming skilled in carpentry, masonry, plastering, or licensed in electrical, plumbing, or HVAC to support the maintenance, repair, and new construction of equipment and systems for the university community.
Apprentices obtain essential skills regarding workplace safety in the construction and maintenance environment, identification and use of tools and equipment, as well as develop behavioral competencies to further their career. Through extensive training, apprentices gain foundational knowledge across all trades, both licensed and non-licensed. Apprentices learn through a combination of on-the-job training and related technical instruction, to be completed outside of work hours. The University covers the cost for all tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), and uniforms.
Selected candidates are hired into a one or two-year restricted position, based on prior related experience or education. Candidates of the program will be provided routine assessments and overall performance evaluations throughout their employment. At the culmination of the initial one or two-year contract, given a successful performance review, a collaborative assessment will occur to determine which of the trades (carpentry, masonry, plastering, plumbing, electrical or HVAC) is the best fit for the employee. Achieving these milestones for the program enables renewal into a second two-year restricted position to complete the apprentice program.
To meet these milestones, apprentices are required to attend all mandatory online classes and meetings, in-person or virtually, maintain a minimum of a B average in all classroom instruction, and must demonstrate effective performance on the job. On-the-job training consists of rotations in Facilities Management departments throughout the University, including maintenance, repair, new construction, utilities, and industrial systems. All training and supplemental courses are provided by the University of Virginia.
