The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library, University of Virginia, seeks a Reference and Instruction Librarian/Archivist. We are searching for a candidate who is eager to join our team of committed cultural heritage memory workers, who enthusiastically support the University’s “founding vision of discovery, innovation, and development of students from all walks of life” while focusing on integrating inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility into every aspect of this position.
As significant as our collections are, we recognize that there are silences and gaps in the documentary record. In support of our library’s reparative work, we seek an individual who understands archival and print silences and who brings a commitment to reference, research, access, and instruction. The ideal candidate for this position is an intellectually curious individual who is eager to learn the stories revealed in our collections and to bring those stories to our researchers.
Key responsibilities include:
Managing and working at the Special Collections reference desk: registering researchers, assisting researchers with locating and requesting materials, processing material requests, overseeing the retrieval of materials, checking out and discharging materials, and providing handling protocols and reading room security
Providing research support for remote reference queries
Managing library systems: monitoring Aeon queues and appointments, locating materials using VIRGO and ArchivesSpace, locating and delivering digitized images in production tracking system for the Library’s Digital Production Group
Following best practices for reference desk and training other staff members
Designing and teaching instruction sessions with a student-centered, active learning approach. Collaborating with faculty to support teaching goals and to identify and prepare rare materials for student use.
About the University of Virginia Library: The University of Virginia was conceived with a library at its heart, placed in the Rotunda at the head of the Academical Village. Today, the UVA Library’s original purpose remains unchanged: to provide access to accumulated knowledge and, in so doing, increase it — in short, to advance learning.
The Library is here to ensure that the University community has the information it needs for teaching, research, and personal enjoyment and enrichment. Regularly ranked in the top quartile of ARL libraries, UVA Library has six locations, more than 220 staffers, and more than 100 student employees. Staff members support a collection that includes more than 20 million manuscripts and archive materials, 4.8 million books, 4.5 million e-books, and hundreds of thousands of journal subscriptions. Additionally, as a major research institution, the Library regularly collaborates with professional organizations such as the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), Virginia Library Association, Association of College and Research Libraries, and others.
The University of Virginia Library is committed to a culture of mutual respect, civility, inclusiveness, cooperation, mindfulness, accountability, and acceptance of individual differences. Departments and individuals are expected to work together, both in professional collaborations and in creating a culture where all can thrive. Library staff enjoy generous benefits for use of Library materials and professional development, in addition to UVA’s standard benefits package.
