The University of Virginia’s Facilities Management (FM) is seeking a motivated Landscape Manager with demonstrated leadership to grow and develop skilled and collaborative talent. The Landscape Manager is responsible for the activities of Supervisors and their teams, ensuring the unique, complex, and multi-faceted historical Grounds of the University are consistently maintained to meet exceptional aesthetic and environmentally sustainable standards.
With a discerning and artistic eye for the finer details, the Landscape Manager partners with Landscape Architects and University and departmental leadership to lead projects to develop and revitalize landscaping installations. The successful incumbent will achieve results by cultivating relationships, assembling appropriate resources, managing communication among stakeholders, monitoring timelines, securing adequate staffing, and providing guidance and customer service to ensure seamless execution.

The Manager must possess comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures used in landscaping management, while also creating opportunity for new ideas to be shared and actively supporting emerging trends to advance the organization.
Key responsibilities in addition to those described above:
Partner with leadership team to establish and manage quality standards, ensuring the department meets the needs and sustainability goals of the University. This includes evaluating and managing effective deployment of resources; monitoring and scheduling work, addressing service requests and overseeing quality assurance programs; preparing cost estimates and written justifications for maintenance projects; responding to inquiries and complaints.
Lead staffing processes to grow and retain a successful team, including recruiting talent, development and training, recognition and retention, succession planning, and performance management.
Participate and provide input into the development and implementation of internal policies; assist with strategic planning, research, studies and special projects, remaining abreast of current policies and initiatives, best practices, regulatory changes, etc. affecting landscape maintenance and support to the University’s missions.
Collect, analyze, and interpret information to identify service and process improvements, developing strategies and applying judgement to create solutions.
Develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with employees, managers, customers, and business partners.
Establish and implement effective administrative programs and procedures, including establishing priorities for work completion and resource deployment in accordance with sound time-management methodology.
Support emergency operations as needed including but not limited to the planning for, responding to, and leading snow removal operations across all of Grounds working shifts that are often longer than and outside of normal operating hours.
Required Qualifications:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent
Minimum Experience: 7 years of landscape maintenance experience in an organization of similar size and complexity as the University. 3 years of leadership experience, including 2 years of formal supervisory experience leading the day-to-day activities of a team.
Licensure: Valid VA driver’s license with zero or positive points balance.
Preferred Qualifications:
Industry-specific certification.
Demonstrated completion of specialized training in compliance with OSHA code.
Anticipated Hiring Range: $70,000 – $80,000 depending on experience and qualifications.

Physical Demands: This job will require standing, traveling, and lifting above and below the waist various weights which may include different landscape equipment and materials. The use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while pruning, driving, weeding, and pushing lawn mowers.
