The Derré Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Lab Specialist Senior employee to work on projects investigating the mechanisms supporting Chlamydia trachomatis infections.
The successful candidate will be expected to :
Participate in laboratory projects involving a combination of microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, microscopy and small animals (mice) techniques. Research activity conducted includes, but is not limited to, maintenance of eukaryotic cell lines, generation and amplification of Chlamydia strains, general molecular biology techniques (cloning and sequence analysis, immuno-precipitation and western-blot), image acquisition of Chlamydia infected cells or tissue by standard and confocal microscopy, image analysis using microscopy computer software, small animal (mice) handling and infection.
Act independently in the design of research projects, the development of methods and procedures.
Assist laboratory members with their projects, as needed.
Develop, design, and conduct one or more small or moderately complex research projects or experiments in line with plan.
Make independent decisions regarding research and daily activities, and ensure all research activities comply with research protocols and regulations.
Record, monitor, and run tests required, and follow protocols and guidelines. Review progress and evaluate results.
Oversee day-to-day operations of projects.
Prioritize workload to ensure deadlines are met.
Confer with PIs in developing plans for research projects and discuss the interpretation of results and the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication.
Responsible for laboratory organization and maintaining equipment.
Train users in equipment operation and research techniques; and explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations, and outcomes.
Act as liaison to other departments, divisions or organizations.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Qualified candidates must have:
Education: Bachelor’s degree, preference of Bachelor’s degree in biomedical/biological sciences or similar.
Experience: Nine years of experience in a lab technician role. May substitute with Master’s or Terminal degree plus four years of experience in a lab technician role and supervisory experience. 12 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.
Required knowledge, skills, abilities:
Proficiency in molecular biology, including but not limited to PCR amplification, Western blotting, plasmid construction and cloning.
Experience in cell culture and sterile microbiology techniques.
Experience in small animal handling.
Accuracy and attention to details.
Work concurrently on several projects and meet deadlines.
Demonstrated initiative in decision-making and problem solving.
Computer skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to articulate information to investigators and other research team members .
Self-motivation and eager to acquire new skills.
