UVA Facilities Management is seeking applicants for Custodial Services Worker positions in their Housing division. Custodians are responsible for building and facility cleanliness in assigned areas through safe work practices and proper housekeeping techniques. Caring for the learning and residential environment of the University, Custodians are a customer-facing contributor who ensures facilities are clean, healthy, and safe for students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
This position performs a variety of custodial tasks ranging from, but not limited to, removing trash, cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and common spaces, dusting, and operating carpet and upholstery extractors, floor buffers and scrubbers. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and specific instructions are given on unusual jobs or unique issues. Custodians are trained to achieve successful results through the department’s quality assurance program, receiving routine inspections and feedback for action.
Custodians maintain good working relationships with customers, staff, students, and supervisors, able to work effectively both independently and on teams. Basic written and positive in-person communication skills are required, in addition to basic computer, tablet, and/or smart phone usage to navigate UVA systems and email.
Note: The shift for this position is: Sunday – Thursday, 11:30pm to 8:00 am.
Duties and responsibilities:
Maintain cleanliness of assigned area, ranging from offices, classrooms, restrooms, and public areas through departmental procedures and custodial practices.
Remove trash, clean bathrooms, wipe down surfaces, dust, vacuum, strip/wax floors, etc. Apply proper methods and materials. Mix cleaning solutions in accordance with specific instructions, using proper personal protective equipment.
Maintain clean and orderly custodial closets and equipment and keep inventories of supplies, requesting additional supplies as needed.
Report all repairs and pest control needs, and any housekeeping-related violations by residents, guests, or staff.
May perform minor maintenance tasks, such as changing bulbs, or more complex tasks including operating cleaning equipment such as extractors, buffers or scrubbers.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Anticipated Hiring Range: Starting at $15/hour, increasing with experience; commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position will also receive an additional $1/hour for shift differential.

Physical Demands: The use of both and a repetitive motion will be required while performing duties as a housekeeper, such as dusting and mopping, etc. This job requires a range of continual movement including: traveling, kneeling, squatting, bending, stooping, twisting and lifting.
