The Darden School of Business seeks an innovative and energetic Associate Director/Senior Associate Director, Editorial and Media Relations professional to join its Communication and Marketing team. This position requires a talented writer and editor who thinks like a managing editor by generating creative content strategies for Darden’s print and electronic platforms. The incumbent will coordinate news coverage for the Darden School and assist in the content creation of leading-edge print, web, email and audiovisual media. The position will also lead Darden’s media relations efforts by managing outside agencies and pitching stories to a wide variety of media outlets.
Content duties include generating daily story ideas and carrying out assignments through researching, reporting, writing and editing articles for Darden’s websites, e-newsletters and other communication platforms. The position will collaborate in the production of all editorial content for the alumni magazine, The Darden Report, and the philanthropy publication, Pillars. The position will also contribute to internal communications initiatives and speechwriting for Darden leadership. Media relations duties include coordinating PR coverage, pitching stories, fielding media requests, and developing relationships with local, regional and national journalists.
To be considered for an Associate Director role, responsibilities include:
Collaborates within a dynamic newsroom team to identify and develop news stories, cover events, interview subjects, manage freelancers, and write and edit content for print, electronic and broadcast communications.
Plans and writes content for Darden’s biannual alumni magazine, The Darden Report, and Darden’s monthly online e-newsletter.
Plans and writes feature-length articles and shorter news briefs for The Darden Report online.
Coordinates and develops news coverage with Darden’s research centers, faculty and operating groups, as needed.
Collaborates with the Communication & Marketing team (graphic designers, photographers, web editors, etc.) to coordinate content for Darden’s platforms.
Manages the content management systems for Darden’s online platforms, posting daily news stories.
Manages freelance writers (providing story assignments, angles and sources and overseeing revisions and approvals), as needed.
Copyedits content, as needed, with a keen eye for detail and error-free copy.
Develops and manages audiovisual storytelling, leveraging the in-house capabilities of Darden Video Productions.
Holds regular meetings with public relations agencies, generating ideas to promote Darden faculty, centers and initiatives, and the Darden enterprise.
Responds to media requests, coordinating appearances of Darden leadership and faculty in print, online and broadcast media.
In addition to the above, Senior Associate Director level responsibilities include:
Utilizes more fully developed technical skills and emerging advanced skills, to take on projects that are more complex.
Applies skills to solve most problems without review, and latitude to devise the approach and method to performing assignments.
Performs long-term or non-routine assignments with minimal supervisory intervention, seeking assistance when significant deviations are proposed, or when unprecedented problems arise.
Trains, serves as a resource, and provides guidance to more junior staff on non-routine problems, processes, and policies.
Assists senior staff in developing approaches to problem-solving and anticipating issues.
Education and Professional Experience:
Associate Director – Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of experience.
Senior Associate Director – Bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of experience required, or Master’s degree with at least five years of journalism or public relations experience. Experience will include leading complex projects and teams with minimal supervision and the ability to mentor and motivate junior team members.
Demonstrated experience as a writer or editor required. Experience as both preferred.
A demonstrated history of developing and executing content strategies.
Project management skills and the ability to oversee a team of freelancers.
General understanding of print and online publishing.
Demonstrated writing ability and knowledge of information gathering, editing and copyediting.
A team player with strong interpersonal skills. Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at Darden (including corporate leaders, alumni, faculty, staff and students) and within the greater University.
Strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to handle many projects and deadlines.
Excellent grasp of AP Style.
Comfort with Microsoft Office and Web-publishing software.
