The McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for a new Assistant Director of Career Development. The Assistant Director will join the Commerce Career Services (CCS) team. CCS is committed to helping McIntire students find careers that best match their skills and aspirations and to providing exceptional service to employers, faculty & staff, and alumni. The Assistant Director of Career Development will assume a wide variety of individual and group advising, counseling, programming, and career journey support and innovation for all McIntire students (undergraduate and graduate).
Responsibilities:
The primary role of the Assistant Director is to provide 1on1 career advising and opportunity search assistance to McIntire students. This role also includes advising via large group workshops or classroom presentations. CCS coaches work closely together and collaborate on student advising, programs, opportunity exploration, industry trends and resource development. Advising includes assistance with career exploration and research, personal branding, networking/mentorship, interviewing skills, job search strategies and offer evaluations and planning for future career pivots and long-term life success.
In collaboration with other coaches, conduct self-directed industry education to gain expertise in emerging industry areas of interest for McIntire students. The Assistant Director also supports the evolving portfolio of academic programs and experiences offered at McIntire along with corresponding student needs associated with this evolution.
Coaching lead on considering and supporting the pre-COMM experience (graduate & undergraduate) which might include an exploration “trek” to cities of primary interest to McIntire students to explore different industries and roles in business.
Create and execute a wide variety of engaging and interactive career-related workshops, often involving industry partners and alumni. These programs will be designed to assist students with career exploration, industry/career education, opportunity searching, networking, interviewing, professional preparedness and other areas of topical importance. Continuous assessment of programs will be required to determine student learning outcomes and to evolve programs accordingly.
Ideally, the Assistant Director will serve as the coaching team’s “marketing lead”, helping to consider ideal communication channels & strategies. He/she will support the Director of Career Development with various communication priorities, act as lead on MyMcIntire Portal (McIntire’s in-house, proprietary communications platform) and other communication portal best practices at UVA, and serve as lead on any other marketing or communications opportunities that arise.
Partner with Associate Directors to support various mentoring programs and best practices at McIntire and UVA (both peer to peer & alumni to student) and potentially co-teach a 1-credit career development class.
Co-lead with other Assistant Director the wellness/student success initiative at McIntire which may include a Backpack2Briefcase series in collaboration with peers across Grounds.
Provide support for the development and updating of career-related content, tools or resources for the MyMcIntire Portal or more broadly, resources curated & featured within the Business community at UVA via the Handshake platform.
Along with all members of the Commerce Career Services team, assist with activities such as: collection and reporting of placement data, the coordination of career fairs or programs, strategic collaborations with alumni & employers, and supporting orientations and other activities for current and prospective students as needed.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in counseling, student affairs, higher education with two years of professional related experience.
Experience developing and delivering presentations to both large and small groups, both in-person and online.
Demonstrated ability to perform with a high degree of professionalism in all work settings including interactions with students, employers, faculty and alumni.
Ability to manage multiple projects (multi-task), solid planning and organizational skills and a high degree of quality and attention to detail is critical.
Strong customer-service orientation, a passion for helping students develop personally and professionally, and an interest in building collaborative relationships with multiple stakeholders.
Comfortable with, and able to address, the emotional needs and stresses of highly driven students in the early stages of their professional journey.
Availability to work evenings and occasional weekends as necessary (some career-related programs are conducted after 5:00pm).
Experience in marketing (programs, resources, tools) or in developing effective communication strategies for customer engagement is preferred.
Anticipated hiring range : $55,000 – $67,000
