The Center for Comparative Medicine at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Director, Comparative Pathology & Veterinary Diagnostics. The mission of the Center for Comparative Medicine is to support biomedical research and teaching that utilizes laboratory animals. The Center does this in a manner which promotes the policies set by the Institutional Care and Use Committee (IACUC) whose charge is to oversee compliance by personnel at the University of Virginia with federal regulations and guidelines.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide oversight and continue to establish the pathology & veterinary diagnostic program for research animals at the University. This position also has a joint appointment (based on experience i.e, assistant, associate) within the Department of Pathology in the School of Medicine.
This position is located on the main grounds of the University of Virginia, but can include semiannual trips to the Anheuser Busch Coastal Research Center in Oyster, VA, The Virginia State Arboretum in Front Royal, VA and/or Mountain Lake Biological Station in Blacksburg, VA.
The successful incumbent will:
Deliver expert consultation on comparative pathology for a variety of laboratory animal species used On Grounds including transgenic mice, rats, rabbits, pigs, sheep, ferrets, prairie voles, zebra finches, white-crowned sparrows, zebra fish, Xenopus tropicalis, and Xenopus laevis.
Provide diagnostic, comparative pathology, and research support including necropsies, macroscopic and microscopic tissue evaluation, project consultation, interpreting findings, preparing reports, and communicating with clinical veterinarians and research personnel.
Understand, follow, and carry out all SOPs, quality assurance standards, safety procedures, and documentation requirements for related activities.
Oversee pathology related diagnostics activities with the CCM sentinel program and animal cases in partnership with the CCM clinical veterinary team.
Training Responsibilities:
Develop laboratory technicians training for new employees and continuing education.
Supervise laboratory technicians to ensure work meets expectations and provide annual evaluations.
Consult with research staff on veterinary comparative pathology matters.
Consult and serve as subject matter expert with the University Research Histology Core and Biorepository & Tissue Research Facility.
Teach and serve as a mentor in the newly developed CCM ACLAM veterinary residency program and veterinary student externship.
Participate in new employee recruitment, interviews and hiring decisions, onboard and train new hires.
Compliance Responsibilities:
Ensure regulatory compliance by reporting instances of non-compliance to the Office of Animal Welfare.
Review, implement, improve & assist in audits of records, procedures & protocols for comparative pathology/diagnostic laboratory.
Minimum Requirements:
Education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree (DVM or VMD) from an AVMA-accredited institution (or successful completion of an educational equivalency certification program)
Experience: 5 years’ experience as a veterinary pathologist (can include years of residency). Work experience as board-certified veterinary pathologist in a research and/or toxicology environment preferred
Licensure: Board Certification from the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (DACVP).
Health Screening Requirement: Employees are required to comply with the Health System’s immunization policy – OCH-002: Occupational Health Screening and Maintenance; this position also requires a drug screening.
The anticipated start date is Summer 2024 (negotiable.) This position is a Managerial & Professional (exempt-level) position and not tenure-track faculty.
Anticipated Hiring Range: $165,000-$185,000 commensurate with education and experience. Relocation reimbursement up to $20,000 will be provided. This is an exempt level (salaried), benefited position. For more information on the benefits at UVA, visit: https://hr.virginia.edu/benefits.

Physical Demands:
The candidate must be able to lift 30lbs, stand at and walk between facilities for up to six hours per day, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment to work in environments that may contain hazards which include: animal allergens, biohazards (ABSL2 & 3), hot machinery, radioisotopes, and chemical hazards.
