The Construction & Renovation Services Department at the University of Virginia’s Facilities Management has an exciting opportunity for an asbestos professional seeking a career with Facilities Management.
The Asbestos Supervisor is a working supervisor position that includes overseeing a team of field technicians in the removal of asbestos containing material, and in some instances lead-containing materials or materials impacted by mold growth. Responsible for leading asbestos projects by overseeing all technicians’ work activities; by ensuring efficient completion of projects, observing, and complying with all safety and project rules, including wearing required personal safety equipment and following all hazardous waste handling guidelines. The Asbestos Supervisor must have the ability to communicate effectively to team, colleagues, and customers through both oral and written communications.
Ensures State and Federal asbestos regulations are followed and must maintain compliance with all policies and procedures to include EPA, NIOSH and OSHA and University requirements.
Trains and mentors’ employees as required on job techniques, safety procedures, and equipment use to removes asbestos or lead from surfaces, using hand or power tools such as scrapers, vacuums, or high-pressure sprayers.
Required to complete and pass the annual Respirator Fit Test.
Supervises the construction of containment areas prior to beginning abatement or decontamination work including assembly of temporary equipment or structures.
Accountable for accurate and complete records.
Must be mechanically inclined with the ability to operate hand tools.
Performs other duties as required.
Will require the ability to work alternating shifts.
Required Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: Four years of experience in asbestos remediation; 5-7 years’ experience preferred.
Licensure: Valid Driver’s License; DPOR Asbestos Supervisor License; Ability to follow through with required safety and licensure screening/requirements.
All selected candidates must complete all required background checks prior to the start date of the position and complete and pass the annual Respirator Fit Test.
Compensation: Hiring rate begins at $32.00/hour; actual offer based on experience and qualifications.
Physical Demands:
The employee must be able to variously sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, lift, pull, and use both hands-on repetitive tasks (including overhead tasks). The employee must have normal vision and hearing (correctable), and for some areas of employment, color vision and sense of smell.
