Animal Research Facilities Manager

Posting Summary:
Serve as Facilities Manager of the University’s animal research facilities which supports biomedical, biological and behavioral research. Provide supervision to staff, coordinate animal care, standards, and training. Coordinate with faculty, research staff, the facility veterinarian, and others to implement program policies and facility SOPS. Maintain the laboratory animal facility including facility space, utilities, animal husbandry, environmental enrichment, technical support, and daily operations. Coordinate with the veterinarian to assist and or support researchers in scheduling and in the conduct of animal related procedures as appropriate. Order and account for facility supplies and equipment. Ensure compliance with facility SOP’s, maintain a health and safety program and provide a continuous improvement and training program for staff. Ensure that facility equipment meets annual certification and preventative maintenance performed on a regular basis. Monitor facility HVAC system to ensure temperatures, humidity and airflows meet regulatory requirements. Ensure that procedures and practices involving the program of animal care are appropriate for the continued maintenance of AAALAC accreditation of the animal facility. Document and maintain records of animal care, preventive medicine, USDA-required, and study protocol-driven documents. Prepare reports and records concerning lab activities, progress and status as requested.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience):
Bachelor’s degree in life sciences or related field and five years animal laboratory experience to include a minimum three years’ experience as a manager or supervisor in a laboratory animal facility and five years total work experience in a laboratory animal facility required. An American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at the Certified Lab Animal Technician LATG level required. Experience and training in laboratory safety issues, OSHA regulations, Chemical and Biological Hazard rules and regulations required. Effective organizational, communication, interpersonal, and instructional skills required. Proficient in general office applications and reporting required. A valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a UVM driver’s check is required.
Special Conditions:
Weekend work required, External candidates must complete a 4-month probationary period, A probationary period may be required, Travel to and from worksites required, 40 hour work week
