Job Summary
The primary responsibility of the Senior Director of Gift Services is
directing and supervising the Gift Services Team. This role is responsible for the installation and continuous refinement of process within
a complex environment to ensure timely and smooth gift processing operations across the entire university while providing both our donors
and our university-wide advancement staff excellent service. The Senior Director will lead the management of large systems and data projects
pertaining to Gift Services. The Senior Director and their team support university-wide advancement staff in all gift acceptance, deposit,
recording, and disbursement needs and questions.
Responsibilities
The Senior Director of Gift Services
directs and supervises the Gift Services Team, which encompasses the gift processing, gift accounting, gift reconciling, and gift auditing
functions for the University of Utah. The Senior Director develops policies and procedures to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of
the team and further its mission and objectives. This role is responsible for the installation and continuous refinement of process within a
complex environment to ensure timely and smooth gift processing operations while providing both our donors and our university-wide
advancement staff excellent service. The Senior Director is responsible for the university’s compliance with university, state, and IRS
audits. They serve as Advancement’s liaison and partner to the university’s other financial departments such as General Accounting, Income
Accounting, Real Estate, and Tax Services in resolving complex gift-related issues. The incumbent will be responsible for the management of
large data and technology projects pertaining to Gift Services. The Senior Director will be consulted by Advancement Senior Leadership and
Gift Services staff for their subject matter expertise in industry best practices, IRS regulations, and State and Federal laws pertaining to
the acceptance and recording of pledges and gifts. The Senior Director will make organizational structure and personnel decisions for the
Gift Services team to set the team up for success in the university’s constantly changing environment. The Senior Director will take steps
to mentor team members and advance the team’s professional development and individual skillsets. The incumbent represents the department and
communicates relevant department-related topics and information to campus-wide advancement staff. This position requires extreme discretion
as it involves working with highly confidential information.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s
degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration or related area, or equivalency; eight years of progressively more responsible
management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required. Applicants must
demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position
description.
Preferences
Department preferred qualifications include the
following:
Masters degree or equivalency; At least five years of experience working in advancement gift services, or
highly related field; Experience managing teams of ten or more people; Experience managing large projects across a team; Excellent reading,
writing, and editing skills and an ability to analyze and synthesize complex information; Excellent organizational skills and attention to
accuracy and detail; Fluency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook; Demonstrated interpersonal skills and effective
communication; Sense of curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.
Other Preferences
Subject matter
expertise in IRS regulations, state and federal law, and industry best practice pertaining to gift acceptance and recording; Significant
hands-on experience working with large data systems in terms of importing/exporting financial data; Significant hands-on experience in
financial reporting; Significant experience supervising, training, mentoring, and growing staff; Experience in high volume data entry;
Experience working with Salesforce; Experience with UC Innovation’s ascend application; Experience with PeopleSoft (specifically accounting
functions); Familiarity with the University of Utah organizational structure.
