Job Summary
Provides computer support by troubleshooting and correcting problems with computer hardware or
software applications. Hybrid position made up of technician and entry level computer positions (including but not limited to: Help Desk
Support, Database & Network Technicians, Entry level Programmer & Software Engineers). May Install and upgrades computer hardware and
software applications. Designs and maintains websites. Creates and maintains databases, network accounts and programs for specific
department needs. Backs up department computer systems on scheduled intervals. Serves as a help desk resource for assigned
areas.

IT EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION
EXPECTATION:
* A Data Center Technician,
working independently or as a member of a team, is proficient in the installation of IT equipment. The term IT equipment includes, but is
not limited to, blade enclosures, network routers, communication switches, servers and storage arrays. The technician is familiar with the
layout and operation of all data centers that fall under the UIT umbrella. The technician sees that all installation work is done in
accordance with racking plan instructions, published manufacturer guidelines, industry best practice standards and University data center
policy and procedures.
DATA CABLING EXPECTATION:
* A Data Center Technician, working independently or as a member of
a team, is proficient in the installation of network communications cabling. The term network cabling includes, but is not limited to,
category 6a copper cable, fiber optics cable and twin-ex cable. The technician insures that all cables are accurately labeled, installed and
dressed in accordance with a detailed written cabling instructions and that all work meets or exceed manufacturer installation guidelines,
industry best practice standards and University data center policy and procedures.
INFRASTRUCTURAL SUPPORT EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION
EXPECTATION:
* A Data Center Technician, working under the direction of a Data Center Specialist or Data Center Engineer, is
proficient in the installation of infrastructural support equipment. The term infrastructural support equipment includes, but is not limited
to, server racks, electrical power taps, power inverters, static transfer switches, cabinet mounted power distribution units, along with
other support equipment as needed. Technicians follow prepared planning documents to see that all installation work is done in accordance
with published manufacturer guidelines, and will meet or exceed industry best practice standards and University data center policy and
procedures.
DATA CENTER INFRASTRUCTURE MONITORING EXPECTATION:
* A Data Center Technician, working independently or
as a member of a team, monitors UIT data center essential operational systems that support data center infrastructure. Technicians see that
all support systems are operating efficiently within established parameters and adjust individual systems when needed to maximize
operational efficiency. Systems monitored include but are not limited to, fire suppression, heating, ventilation and air conditioning,
utility supplied electrical circuits, backup generators, and emergency supplied electrical circuits. The technician sees that all system
trouble warnings and alarms are properly investigated, addressed, cleared and reported. Technicians are empowered to escalate incidents that
cannot be locally resolved by calling data center engineers and/or service maintenance contractors for assistance in handling unresolved
issues.
PHYSICAL SECURITY – DATA CENTER FACILITIES EXPECTATION:
* A Data Center Technician, working independently or
as a member of a team, provides physical security for UIT Data Center facilities. Security is maintained by routine site tours of facilities
to insure that data center doors are tightly shut, properly locked with detection systems in place and working properly. Technicians monitor
both exterior and interior surveillance cameras in order to observe and respond to unauthorized access or suspicious activities in and
around the facility. Technicians are responsible to receive, acknowledge and respond to intrusion alarms ensuring that any compromised door
access is re-secured, the alarm is reset and intrusion details reported.
PHYSICAL SECURITY – ACCESS MANAGEMENT
EXPECTATION:
* A Data Center Technician, working independently or as a member of a team, provides access management for the
Downtown Data Center facility (DDC). Technicians personally receives and screen all data center visitors; insure that all visitors are
properly checked in by using either the on-file fingerprint recognition scanner or by manual signing the visitor log and, when necessary,
checking at least one form of government issued identification. Technicians determine that data center visitors, maintenance contractors,
and IT tenant support staff, have be preauthorized to enter the data center. Technicians are entrusted to see that clearances are valid and
current and that each visitor has a legitimate business need to be in the DDC. At the conclusion of each visit, technicians are responsible
to see that each individual is properly checked-out and DDC credentials are collected and securely filed.
CAMPUS HELP DESK AFTER
HOURS COVERAGE EXPECTATION:
* Data Center Technicians provide back-up help desk coverage during hours not currently staffed by
the Campus Help Desk team; weekdays 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM, weekends and University holidays, all hours. Technicians are empowered to change
passwords on non-blocked individual UNID accounts, and submit trouble tickets for emergency infrastructure issues dealing with wired and
wireless networks, telephone communications, email service and printing.
REMOTE HANDS SERVICES EXPECTATION:
* Data
center technicians are capable of providing tenant directed remote hands services. Remote hands service is offered when specifically
requested by a recognized data center tenant with a proper level of management authority to make changes to equipment housed in a UIT data
center.
PREPARE BACKUP MEDIA FOR OFF-SITE STORAGE EXPECTATION:
* Data center technicians are capable of preparing
backup tapes for daily offsite rotation; able to respond to requests to retrieve tapes from the backup library; add new tapes to the library
when requested; prepare tapes for an end-of-month rotation.
Minimum Qualifications
High School graduate
or equivalent and four years experience in electronic and/or pneumatic control systems.
Department Specific
Requirements:
No less than nine-month practical experience and training in a technical capacity in any of the following: data
centers, facility operations, IT support, metal or plastics fabrication, hardware assembly.
