Laboratory Manager, Genetic and Molecular Laboratories
University of The Bahamas Small Island Sustainability is pleased to invite applications for the position of Laboratory Manager in its Genetics and Molecular Laboratories. This full-time appointment will commence 1st August, 2023.
The Small Island Sustainability Research Complex (SISRC) at University of The Bahamas seeks a Molecular Lab Manager to work in a dynamic, stimulating environment in an educational institution. The laboratory will support research in agriculture, food, environment, forestry, marine science and forensics. The successful candidate should be self-motivated and committed to continuous improvement of the facilities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Executive Director the laboratory manager shall:
§ will oversee all molecular laboratories and testing;
§ manage and coordinate all laboratory staffing and training;
§ assist in developing training programmes and documents;
§ assist with cost analyses and budget development and monitoring;
§ utilize protocols with a variety of molecular assays including but not limited to PCR, RT-PCR, QRT-PCR, capillary gel electrophoresis and Sanger sequencing;
§ prepare samples and specimens for testing;
§ help develop and maintain quality assurance, quality control and safety standards and documents;
§ ensure that laboratory supplies are maintained and ordered as needed; ensure that laboratory equipment is maintained in proper working order;
§ assist with the organization and tracking of data and samples;
§ troubleshoot problems relating to routine operation of laboratory;
§ Maintain and assist with the development of policies and procedures; and
§ perform other duties as necessary.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
§ Experience operating genetics and molecular instruments/equipment
§ Proficiency with standard methods and techniques used in genetics and molecular biology
§ experience with research-based laboratory management
§ exceptional verbal and written communication, and organizational skills
§ Ability to manage personnel such as technical staff and students
§ Ability to create and manage budgets
§ Proficient in the use of computing technology and prevailing technological, productivity enhancing tools
§ Ability to work well in a team environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
§ Master’s degree from an accredited institution in molecular biology, genetics or a closely related field and two years of relevant experience; or
§ Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in molecular biology, genetics or a closely related field and four years of relevant experience;

Setting. The Small Island Sustainability Research Complex is comprised of approximately 12,000 square feet of research, teaching and office spaces. There are six laboratories dedicated to sustainability science research in chemical and environmental analysis; plant, soil and water sciences; laser, optical and atmospheric sciences; natural products research and development; spatial visualization and remote sensing; and plant biotechnology. Several of the laboratories at the SISRC will utilize a shared services model and will provide testing and development services for external customers.
