Purpose
Serve as the department’s coding, billing, payment posting, and insurance specialist with a vast knowledge and application of all aspects of insurance claims filing for services provided at University Health services (UHS). Provides other complex administrative duties and support relative to the filing of third-party insurance claims, cashiering, payment processing, referrals, coding and billing compliance program and training.

The Billing and Insurance team is seeking an energetic teammember who works well independently and primarily in a remote setting based on current business need. This office is currently working 90-95% remote with some office presence as needed or assigned. Applicants must reside in the greater Austin area.
Responsibilities
Ensures accurate, compliant, and timely submission of insurance claims to provide accurate and efficient reimbursement.
Reviews patient encounters for proper use of procedure and diagnostic codes/modifiers.
Reviews all Evaluation & Management encounters for correct E/M level selection by the provider and makes edits if a higher code is supported or will query the provider if a lower E/M level might be supported or if any documentation is ambiguous.
Utilizes CPT, ICD-10 and HCPCS manuals, and insurance policies to ensure accurate coding as been used to optimize reimbursement.
Reads and understands payor specific billing requirements as outlined in procedure manuals, payor newsletters, and internal communication and incorporates and updates.
Reviews claim and account data and makes applicable corrections to ensure claims meet all payor specific compliance guidelines and accounts are accurate.
Liaisons with UHS staff, insurance payors, and patients as needed to resolve billing and reimbursement issues to completion.
Processes payments from insurance reimbursements for services provided at UHS as necessary.
Post payments from Explanation of Benefits received and process insurance correspondence.
Correct rejected claims and file claims for reconsideration.
Perform appeals processing tasks as required from insurance companies in a time efficient manner.
Research unpaid claims and reviews insurance contracts as it relates to claims payments.
Returns checks to health insurance companies and other UT systems clinics that were sent in error.
Contacts insurance companies to clarify problematic situations.
Lockbox retrieval and processing, as needed.
On-site payment, insurance, and correspondence preparation.
Support coding and billing compliance program.
Reviews codes and billing for appropriateness and accuracy.
Makes recommendations for code additions, deletions, or modifications based on guideline changes or denial trends seen.
Participates in billing and coding audit process.
Participates with process improvement and optimal reimbursement initiatives.
Performs reimbursement analysis to ensure payments are consistent with negotiated contract rates and benefit.
Trains staff as delegated by Manager to include departmental staff and UHS organization as needed.
Provide feedback, create, and/or implement job specific training documents for your role.
Provides training to new employees as delegated.
Provides coding, billing, and insurance training to clinicians and administrative staff.
Participates in other activities as appropriate and assigned.
Data entry of patient insurance information from various sources including electronic queue.
Assists patients with form completion to lift registration holds.
Establishes patient payment plan contracts.
Processes service extension fee applications.
Performs Inter-Departmental Transactions as necessary.
Processes “Do Not File to Insurance” requests from patients.
On-site payment, insurance, and correspondence preparation.
Provides data entry and claim processing for additional seasonal healthcare events on campus e.g. flu clinics, International student Immunization clinics.
Understands and complies with all applicable UHS and UT policies and procedures as well as all applicable state and federal laws
Exhibits exceptional customer service behavior and excellent public relations skills in all aspects of work.

Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
Minimum of three (3) years working in ambulatory family practice care setting performing medical coding, billing, and payment posting with electronic health records and electronic medical claims submissions.
Must possess coding certification from AAPC or AHIMA (Apprentice status will only be accepted if issued by AAPC).
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a medical business office for a university student health center.
Three (3) or more years working as a Certified Professional Coder performing task such as medical coding, billing, and payment posting.
Salary Range
$48,000 + depending on qualificaitons
