LDA-Coordinator for Leadership & Service

The Jones Center for Leadership and Service within the Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications for the position of Coordinator for Outreach and Initiatives. This is an exempt, full-time, non-tenure track, one-year limited duration staff position with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years.

The Jones Center for Leadership and Service (JCLS) educates and engages all students to lead and serve the global community. This is accomplished through an intersection of programs and services open to any student interested in furthering their leadership skills and serving the community. Programs within the JCLS include cohort-based leadership development, first-year and emerging leadership education, intensive leadership institutes and conferences, days of service, living/learning communities, alternative break programs, and on-going service opportunities that tackle food and shelter insecurity, poverty, literacy, environmental conservation, animal outreach, and healthcare.

The Position:

• The Coordinator for Leadership & Service will oversee the development and expansion of leadership and service initiatives, focusing primarily on Ignite, an extended orientation and leadership education program. This position plays a critical role leading the coordination and development of programming for Ignite (Knox, Serves, and Leadership Summit) while supporting the overall mission of the Jones Center for Leadership and Service and the Division of Student Life. The coordinator is responsible for Ignite student leader recruitment, selection, and training, as well as programmatic curriculum development, risk management, budget, and assessment.

Qualifications

Responsibilities:

• EVENT PLANNING & PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: Oversee all aspects of event planning and program evaluation for Ignite (Knox, Serves, and Leadership Summit), including participant recruitment and registration management (Fusion or other software); develop and implement communication plan with Undergraduate Admissions for incoming students; manage the fee waiver application and award process; communicate/coordinate with campus partners and off-campus vendors; manage venue identification and procurement processes for retreats, programs, etc.; oversee budget; oversee the event schedule and publication materials; serve as the primary contact for major programs and signature events associated with Ignite; Support programmatic expansion plans and the development of programs for special populations (i.e., Transfer, Veterans).
• SUPERVISION & INSTRUCTION: Supervise Ignite Graduate Assistant; Responsible for the recruitment, selection, training and supervision of Ignite Student Staff (6-8 Ignite Student Directors and 100+ Team Leaders), which includes travel to support student leaders at conferences, retreats, and events; Support department student assistants; Oversee relevant course enrollment and curriculum development and implementation for leadership studies courses in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) for Ignite Team Leaders and Student Directors.
• STRATEGIC PLANNIING & ASSESSMENT: Conduct assessment and data analysis for Ignite (Knox, Serves, and Leadership Summit); Track student persistence and retention figures; Identify trends and suggest improvements to programs, publications, and registration software; Assist with department strategic planning and implementation of initiatives that directly support the leadership and service goals of the University and Division’s strategic plans; Contribute to department assessment to evaluate student learning, student development, and stakeholder perceptions; Contribute to publications, including website content; Prepare a robust annual Ignite assessment report for departmental namesake donors, Clay and Debbie Jones.
• LEADERSHIP & OUTREACH: Serve as a key member of the CliftonStrengths Campus Facilitation Team, the Catalyst Leadership Conference Facilitation Team, and the Leadership and Service Advisory Committee; Represent department on the Orientation Advisory Committee and other divisional and campus-wide committees; Travel to participate in New Vol Roll Call events; Cultivate relationships with key campus and community stakeholders and programmatic vendors; Collaborate on fundraising and sponsorship procurement activities to support the Ignite leadership development program; Serve as steward to current donors.

What We Require:

Education:

• This position requires a master’s degree from an accredited institution that must be earned by August 2022.

Experience:

• This position requires a minimum of one year of experience working in student affairs/higher education with a demonstrated commitment to the educational development and success of students. Two years as a graduate assistant is equivalent to one year of professional experience.

• Working knowledge of student development and leadership theory
• Ability to collaborate with internal/external constituents
• Specialized knowledge of issues related to student transition to college
• Ability to relate to and communicate effectively with students, parents, and other university partners
• Strong interpersonal, listening, presentation, organization, and oral/written communication skills; event and retreat planning, supervision and management
• Ability to show initiative and make sound decisions; Ability to incorporate principles of diversity and/or social justice into decision-making processes

What We Prefer:

Experience:

• Professional experience in the area of leadership, service, new student orientation or extended orientation programs
• Administrative experience in program planning at the college level
• Experience coordinating, planning, or attending leadership and community service opportunities
• Experience advising students individually and/or in organizations/groups
• Experience with assessment and evaluation

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

• Skilled in coordination/oversight of leadership development and service programming
• Experience coordinating major events with university administrators and/or key campus and community stakeholders
• Knowledge of Campus Labs and Fusion, or similar event registration software
• Skilled in classroom instruction or student leader training.

Salary: The anticipated salary for this position is $43,000, commensurate with experience and other qualifications and is accompanied by a standard university benefits package.
