Description:
The College of Education, Health and Human Sciences at The University of Tennessee is seeking a Clinical Assistant Professor of Literacy Education in the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education (TPTE). This is a one-year position with a possibility for renewal. We are looking for a colleague who can engage substantially in teaching coursework, developing instructional resources and materials for face-to-face and online learning, and providing field supervision within our undergraduate and graduate preparation programs. We welcome applicants who can also potentially contribute to literacy education scholarship.
The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences is a multidisciplinary unit with 90+ tenured/tenure-track faculty members, housed in eight departments. TPTE, the College’s largest department, offers programs of study that lead to initial teacher licensure in many areas as well as undergraduate programs in educational interpreting and audiology/speech pathology, advanced programs leading to several teaching endorsements including gifted education and the reading specialist, masters and educational specialist degrees, and doctoral degrees. Beyond the licensure programs, other graduate elementary education programs prepare master’s students, educational specialists, and doctoral students for careers in research, teaching, and leadership in research universities, teaching colleges, and elementary schools.
Duties/Responsibilities
Duties will include teaching primarily undergraduate reading courses that focus on literacy instruction for children in PreK to 2nd and 3rd to 5th grades, potential teaching of literacy specialist distance education courses, and supervision of literacy-teacher education undergraduate students during clinical; serving on graduate student and departmental committees.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
Required qualifications include (1) an earned doctorate in Literacy Education or related field (e.g., curriculum and instruction, teacher education, special education); (2), successful teaching experience at the K-12 level for a minimum of 6 years; (3) successful experience or demonstrated potential in field supervision and collaboration with personnel in PreK-5 school settings; (4) successful experience or demonstrated potential in college teaching; (5) ability to work within a collaborative team; (6) demonstrated ability in integrating technology into teaching and learning; (7) successful experience or demonstrated potential in responding to ethnic, linguistic, gender, and cultural diversity; and (8) an understanding of the current landscape of literacy education, including International Literacy Association and State of Tennessee literacy standards and key challenges. Preference will be given to applicants with a Literacy/Reading Specialist degree or certificate.
Desired Qualifications
Desired qualifications include (1) demonstrated scholarship or scholarly potential, (2) experience with Canvas, (3) Experience with licensure expectations within an initial licensure program, (4) experience with assessments and instruction in writing and reading with PreK-5 learners.
