Professor and Director of Quantum Initiative
Quantum Information Science and
Engineering
University of Tennessee, Chattanooga
In 2022, The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC)
launched an institutional initiative in Quantum Information Technology
with the goal to establish a program known for excellence in education, innovation, and economic development enabled by Quantum Technology
(QT). Based on progress achieved to date, we seek to fill several positions as we evolve the initiative into a Quantum Center within the UTC Research Institute. The initiative is the focal point for cross-disciplinary
teams performing applied research and development (R&D) and delivering an effective education program of great value to students and
individuals already in the workforce. Of particular interest are use cases of QT in advanced energy systems, and in smart city applications.
The initiative will expand on and add to the quantum sensing effort that was launched in 2022/23 by Dr. Tian Li.
Part of our Quantum
R&D and educational infrastructure is a lab located on the UTC campus, connected to the EPB
Quantum Network powered by Qubitekk. This lab is equipped with a Quantum Network Interface Console, an 8-channel Superconducting
Nanowire Single-Photon Detector (SNSPD), 3 quantum entanglement sources (two at 1570 nm, one at 810 nm), and optical hardware for quantum
optics experiments both at 810 nm and 1570 nm.
The initiative has strong ties to Departments and Programs in STEM (e.g.,
Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering) and non-STEM (e.g., Communications, Sociology, Economics,
Entrepreneurship), and it will advance collaborations with partners in the Chattanooga ecosystem, in academia, industry, and national labs
such as the nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
The Quantum Initiative seeks an experienced quantum scientist or engineer,
up to full Professor rank (12-month), to direct the overall effort. The Director will be expected to continue her or his research program,
mentoring faculty, post-docs and students, and advancing the collaborative and cross-disciplinary work environment at UTC and in the
Chattanooga ecosystem.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
* Provide leadership for the initiative team.
* Represent the
effort in all internal and external interactions.
* Engage with an advisory group.
* Organize teams to leverage internal funding and
partnerships to capture significant extramural funding and build a sustainable portfolio of activities.
* Help shape the developing QISE
curriculum at UTC, teach and mentor students.
Qualifications:
* Advanced degrees (PhD or equivalent required), awarded in
relevant areas of Physics, Engineering, or Mathematics with a strong commitment to advance and apply QT.
* Experience in strategy
development and successful research leadership in quantum networking, sensing, or computing, and use cases of QT.
* Excellent oral and
written communication skills.
* Strong publication record indicative of successful teamwork.
Application Process
For full consideration, in addition to the online application, candidates must include the following:
Additionally, candidates will
need to include names, titles, and email addresses for three (3) references for confidential letters of recommendation to be requested.

About Chattanooga
Chattanooga is located on the Tennessee River within minutes of beautiful outdoor environments in the Appalachian Mountains,
within a day’s drive of the best beaches in the Gulf of Mexico and on the Eastern US Seaboard, with excellent air travel connections to
major cities in the East and Mid-West. It is widely recognized as one of the innovative “smart” US cities internationally and was among the
first US cities to be officially recognized by US Ignite (us-ignite.org) as a Smart Gigabit Community. This designation indicates a
commitment by the community to leverage advanced science, mathematics, engineering, computing and networking technologies to improve city
processes and quality of life for all citizens. The city’s ongoing dedication to advancing technology has attracted dozens of startups to
join companies already here such as Volkswagen, Amazon, Unum, McKee Foods, U.S. Xpress, and Coca-Cola Bottling Co. United.
The
University of Tennessee Chattanooga is an EEO/AA/Title VI/Title IX/Section 504/ADA/ADEA institution. All qualified applicants will receive
equal consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex,
pregnancy, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, physical or mental disability, or protected veteran
