Undergraduate Residential Life Mission Statement:
Undergraduate Residential Life commits to promoting an inclusive community in a secure and welcoming environment that fosters holistic
student development. We extend opportunities for student leadership, interpersonal relationships, and self-exploration through meaningful
programming, supportive staff and collaboration with campus partners. Our work aligns with the University of Rochester’s Meliora Vision &
Values. https://www.rochester.edu/about/values.html
At the University of Rochester, the College (Arts, Sciences &
Engineering) is the primary undergraduate division with a full-time student enrollment of more than 5,000, approximately 85% of whom live on
campus for all four undergraduate years. International students make up 25% of our undergraduate student population (coming from more than
70 countries,) with US students representing all 50 states, DC and several US territories.
The University of Rochester does not
have a traditional student affairs division. Residential Life, along with other student life departments, reports directly to the Dean of
the College. This places Residential Life at the center of the undergraduate experience. Our professional staff collaborates routinely with
colleagues from departments throughout the College. The Associate Director can expect to be designated as the Residential Life
representative on committees, working groups and roundtables, and to participate in special projects and initiatives across the campus.
The Rochester Curriculum for undergraduate students has no required courses, and stresses that students must follow their passions
and take ownership of their education. The open curriculum and academic rigor attract students who have the confidence, tenacity and desire
to push boundaries, to expect more, and to innovate. This is reflected in over 280 vibrant clubs and organizations, a very active student
government, high participation in study abroad programs, and an enviable student retention rate. In the residence halls, apartments and
fraternity houses, this is evidenced by a strong Leadership Ambassador program that forms the basis of our Residence Hall Association,
promotes engaged leadership development, innovative peer mentorship, creative programming and highly a competitive selection process for the
Resident Advisor position.
