Submitted samples typically include blood, swabs, organs, feces, and dead animal carcasses. Periodic communications with submitters may be needed to obtain case histories and address submission discrepancies.
Typical tasks include opening packages, sorting, and dividing specimens, completing and checking submission forms, accessioning samples, and organizing specimens according to tests requested. Particular attention to details is important. Animals and specimens are logged into a laboratory information system (LIMS) and associated Penn Vet and Pennsylvania Game Commission databases (WHIN, eLabs, PGC accessions), then delivered or shipped to the laboratory sections or referral laboratories performing testing, and/or filed for storage into the WFP biobank. This technician will assist with biobank database and sample management. In addition, the technician will enter PADLS LIMS generated results into WHIN and work with the Wildlife Pathologist to determine general diagnostic results. The position also includes maintaining the receiving area by disinfecting after contact with samples, removing biohazard waste and organizing materials for accessioning and shipping samples.
Some duties will be related to the diagnostic laboratory’s quality system that may include document management, report generation, and forms maintenance in compliance with the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians’ (AAVLD) Requirements for Laboratory Accreditation and other applicable requirements.Job Description
Job Responsibilities
Receive and accession animals and associated specimens submitted to the Wildlife Futures Program (WFP), including blood, swabs, organs, feces, and animal carcasses into LIMS and associated databases and spreadsheets. (WHIN, eLabs, PGC accession spreadsheet), and ensuring proper labeling and storage for all samples.This includes accurately transcribing case histories into associated databases.
Organize and divide specimens for the purpose of delivering them to the laboratory section(s) to perform the requested testing, shipping them to outside referral laboratories, collaborators, or organizing them into the WFP biobank.Will work collaboratively with sample resource manager on biobanking.
Adding reports to WHIN from PADLS generated LIMS accessions.Work with wildlife pathologist and their prosector to ascertain general diagnosis for necropsy cases as needed.
Maintain sample receiving area and supplies.Includes disinfecting the area, biohazard removal, organization, and storage and organization of shipping materials.
Communicate with submitters to obtain case histories and address submission discrepancies as needed.
Other administrative duties such as keeping CWD specimen test counts, receiving, and distributing mail, and updating and training on quality related documents.

Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree and 0-1 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Candidates must have effective verbal and written English communication skills. The position requires operating specialized laboratory equipment and handling a wide variety of animal specimens, which will regularly require lifting and carrying boxes/bags weighing up to 50 pounds. The preferred candidate must be proficient with Microsoft applications and have a valid driver’s license; experience with Access databases is desirable. They should also enjoy working well with others in a collaborative team environment and ideally have experience working with laboratory information management systems (LIMS). Vaccination against rabies and a current titer (checked within the last 2 years if the initial vaccination series was administered more than 2 years ago) is required; vaccination can be provided upon employment.
