This position is responsible for leading the strategic approach to drive Penn Admissions’ always-on social channels, including creating content for each channel with the support of a robust paid student workforce. This role will work within the Marketing & Communications team, and specifically the side of the team dedicated to driving prospective students to apply. The role will collaborate across the Admissions Office and with University partners (Financial Aid, Penn Academic programs, Cultural Resource Centers, etc.) to identify opportunities, define goals for social content, and tell the stories that drive interest in our community in order to attract a diverse audience to our owned channels. The role will manage a team of paid student workers and will train and direct this team to create student-forward content that meets the business goals of Penn Admissions.
This will be a hybrid position with the flexibility to work within our office 2 days a week and additional days from home according to your own desired schedule.Job Description
Job Responsibilities
The Social Media Manager will be responsible for leading a team of student workers to deliver platform-leading engagement and effectiveness and:
Provide first-class audience response/experience through community management and engagement.
Lead social platform strategy for @PreviewingPenn handles including maintaining platform play books and content calendars.
Partner with cross functional teams, including Student Financial Services, Penn Cultural Resource Centers, Penn Academic & Research Centers, and other core Student Life and Academic initiatives to bring diverse perspectives and student stories to our channels that serve our business goals around recruiting and yielding an extraordinary and inclusive first-year class.
Set overall goals and metrics for social campaigns and use data to optimize performance and inform future work.
Identify opportunities to collaborate with ambassadors across the University (students, faculty and staff) to develop creative and informative content.
Develop social listening strategies to manage crisis, reporting, and social advocate tracking.
Identify opportunities for innovation in emerging social channels and develop plans to test-and-learn, while maintaining owned platforms and channels.
Identify and occasionally attend on-campus events to generate content as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Marketing, Communications, Art, or Business and 3 to 5 years of social media communications planning and execution experience preferred.
A deep commitment to issues of access and inclusion within higher education, and an understanding that these are essential lenses through which every project and work product created by our office must be viewed.
Must have a desire and passion to find new ways to engage and share Penn stories with our audiences.
Deep knowledge and understanding of social media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, etc.) and understanding of trends and emerging platforms in social media.
Excellent communication skills to communicate information and ideas in written and verbal formats to colleagues and senior management.
Knowledge of social media design and management tools (Hootsuite, Canva, Inshot, Capcut).
Ability to lead, plan, develop, and implement projects / programs that deliver on priorities and the communication skills and collaborative spirit to maintain relationships while also redirecting interest if a project is not viable or aligned with priorities.
Vision to establish measurements and success metrics and to teach others to understand and value this data.
Management experience or experience leading and directing volunteers or student organizations.
