Job Description Summary
Under the direction of the PI and within Institutional guidelines, the individual will be responsible for maitenance of an extensive transgenic mouse colony (30+ different lines), including setting up and monitoring breeding, culling, weaning offspring, identifying mice by toe tattoo or ear clipping, collecting samples from offspring, extracting the DNA and conducting genotyping by PCR and gel imaging of the products. Understanding of cre-lox biology in mice is a plus. The incumbent will also maintain and continuously update clear records in the common laboratory databases of the mouse inventory and gel records of genotyping PCRs so that other lab members can access that information and the PI can make informed decisions regarding mouse usage. There must be clear communication between the incumbent and various lab members regarding the status of different strains. The incumbent must be proficient with basic laboratory techniques pertinent to immunology and molecular biology, including the ability to make solutions and reagents following a written protocol. Experience and proficiency in at least one of the following techniques is preffered: cell culture, ELISA, quantitative RT-PCR, western blotting, and/or immunnofluoresence. Knowledge of basic mouse anatomy is also preffered, especially with respect to organs of the immune or nervous systems. The individual will also receive training in experimental techniques to be able to assist other lab members as needed.
