Job Responsibilities
This individual will manage, schedule, stock, and perform veterinary technical work on the mobile unit project. They will be directly involved in anesthesia, monitoring, prep, recovery, and controlled substance management in a state of the art mobile clinic, as well as manage maintenance of veterinary equipment on the unit. They will also take a lead role in teaching veterinary students in clinical settings and students involved in outreach activities. They will have management responsibilities including developing and maintaining SOPs, EMR management, program planning, varied computer work, and teaching. They must be able to work independently, identify and solve problems, and have excellent technological skills. They will be in charge of scheduling the location, students, and staff for the unit and liaise with partner organization leadership and/or staff. They will take a leadership role in managing program daily operations and will function as a clinic manager including executing budgeting and ordering. This individual will be expected to have respectful and professional interactions with others at Penn Vet and with partners and participate in data collection, research, grant reporting, outreach, and other responsibilities as designated by the Penn Vet Shelter Medicine Program. The individual will need to be able to lift patients, including large breed dogs and cats in humane traps, load supplies on and off the unit including into a high storage area, stand for ten hour shifts, and sit for periods of time to do project work when appropriate. They will be expected to create projects such as informational brochures, orientation materials, SOPs, and training programs. This individual will be a vital member of the shelter medicine team taking on organizational workload independently and regularly reviewing project progress with the team. The shelter medicine team is seeking an applicant who takes initiative, is adaptable to changing contexts and situations, learns new skills quickly, and can remain calm in stressful situations. Weekly schedules can vary based on clinical workload and task priorities.
Qualifications
Associates Degree, Vocation or Technical School and 3-5 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Must be a licensed CVT in Pennsylvania and experience with high-quality, high-volume surgery is beneficial. Excellent foundational veterinary technical skills are required including anesthesia, surgical monitoring, prep, restraint, behavior, radiology, instrument management, and dentistry. Individual should have experience teaching, with high value placed on previous work instructing veterinary students and technical staff. Some experience in shelter medicine is required. Outreach experience to the community is also encouraged. Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Forms. Lack of computer skills is disqualifying. You should also be proficient at using electronic medical records. Experience with Clinic HQ is a positive, but not a requirement. Fear Free or Penn Vet CALM certification is also a positive, but not a requirement.
