Posted Job TitleFinancial Data Analyst – Division of FinanceJob Profile TitleAccountant/Financial AnalystJob Description SummaryThe Financial Data Analyst supports the missions of the Finance & Treasury department, the Division of Finance (DoF), the Office of the EVP, and the University by creating and maintaining financial models that provide input into the University’s long term financial plans, contributing to the annual budget and quarterly forecast cycle for the Division of Finance and the Special Orgs it oversees, and providing decision support to leadership for the University’s investment spending priorities.
The Financial Data Analyst will create a consolidated long-term forecast model for Graduate & Professional Financial Aid expenses. While the 12 schools own the budget and forecast for their own programs, a central model is needed to analyze trends, provide reporting, and conduct scenario planning that can be used to improve the consolidated long term financial model.
The Financial Data Analyst will manage the administrative aspects of assigned DoF departments and Org 0004’s (Central Bank) annual budget and quarterly forecast. This will involve working with the department heads and other leaders to understand their budget needs, anticipate questions from DoF and Budget Planning & Analysis, and respond to data requests. The position will work closely with Finance & Treasury leadership to understand Org 0004’s financial statements and translate the output into inputs for the budget and forecast.
The Financial Data Analyst will also provide monthly budget variance reporting, metrics for use by DoF leadership and the EVP Office, and other ad hoc reports as needed. The Financial Data Analyst will also write a quarterly summary of results highlighting material variances for inclusion in the DoF quarterly forecast summary to Budget Planning & Analysis. The Financial Data Analyst will assist the FP&A Director with DoF budget consolidation, and assist DoF departments with other budget, administrative, and approval responsibilities (Workday Budget Partner, purchasing activities, payroll reallocations, etc.)
The Financial Data Analyst will provide decision support to Finance & Treasury, DoF, and University leadership by conducting cost-benefit analyses (CBAs) as part of School/Center business cases to assess the viability and impact of new spending proposals. This will cover discrete projects owned by DoF, cross functional projects between DoF and other University partners, and other major University initiatives that request Org 0004 funding. The threshold for a CBA may vary based on the capacity of the FP&A team, but generally should be material to DoF and University finances (at least $1M). The goal of these CBAs will be to objectively assess the financial impact of these spending decisions using common finance measures such as Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return, and Discounted payback/breakeven time.
The Financial Data Analyst will work closely with the FP&A Director and SMEs in DoF and across the University to build CBAs. The Financial Data Analyst may be asked to train other analysts on financial concepts used to develop CBAs. These CBAs will support the goal of improved fiscal stewardship with measurable results.
In the Division of Finance, we recognize diversity and inclusion is paramount to a positive and thriving work environment; it is a business imperative. We are committed to actively fostering diversity, inclusion and cultural competency throughout our operational efforts in the Division of Finance. This role will be critical in supporting those efforts and demonstrating behaviors and competencies that reflect Penn’s values.
We take pride in the myriad ways that diversity enriches our curriculum, and the cultural and social life of our campus. Penn’s commitment to achieving eminence through diversity is ultimately a commitment to creating a more vibrant university so that our graduates will be both stimulated and empowered to shape a better world.Job Description
