The Urban Teaching Residency (UTR) program is organized around issues of equity, social justice, and anti-racism as well as research-based frameworks of teaching and learning. UTR offers students the ability to earn a master’s degree and/or teaching certifications while continuing to work full-time. UTR offers certifications in general education and special education in Pennsylvania. The program also offers a fully online master’s degree in urban education. UTR seeks an Associate Director of Fieldwork and Advising. This person will be responsible for implementing the UTR coaching program, which is required for students to earn their certification. This role will also take an active role in leading the team in program data collection, analysis, and improvement.Job Description
Job Responsibilities
Fieldwork, School Relationships, and Partners: Manage the UTR coaching program course teaching mentoring and coaching to UTR student coaches; Align the coaching program with UTR courses and schools using data (i.e., collect data from observations of teachers in the field); Build relationships with leaders in support of UTR students and alumni. Develop new partnerships between schools and districts with UTR.
Evidence-based ongoing program improvement and student support: Use data to ensure students are meeting requirements (analyze certification requirement data, including praxis test scores, PDE 430s, course grades, fieldwork, etc.); Lead the student advising system, including developing and overseeing student improvement plans related to the data above to successfully advise students; Implement feedback loop and whole team engagement with data and improvement planning.
Pipeline of recruitment, support, and retention in the teaching profession and in particular in Philadelphia: Mange UTR’s intergenerational communities of practice (ex: affinity groups for teachers lead by UTR teaching alumni); Foster the development of students’ teacher identities by engaging them in the intellectual work of teaching from undergraduates through veteran teachers; Curate teacher professional development based on needs identified in coaching, courses, and data.
Advise a cohort of first-year students. Meet individually with advisees twice a semester; Support students in their graduate and professional goals; Follow-up on the academic and certification progress of your specific advisees and identify trends to address and advising meetings and for program improvement.
Teach 1 course in the program each academic year. Based on content expertise, teach one course a year in the UTR or Urban Education program; Courses in UTR meet once a week for 2 or 3 hours in the evenings.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
REQUIRED:
A Master’s degree and 2-3 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience supporting novice teachers in high-need urban schools
Experience teaching in urban public schools
Ability to teach at the graduate level
PREFERRED:
At least 5-7 years of experience working in education
Teaching experience in Philadelphia
Knowledge of special education or science
Previous experience teaching at the graduate level
