General Description / Primary Purpose:
The Director Military Veterans Programs & Services, under the direction of an Assistant Vice President or above, provides leadership and guidance for a university department.
Job Function:
This position reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Engagement & International Affairs and is responsible for managing day-to-day operations of the Center; to develop innovative programs and services to assist military connected students in successfully achieving academic success, transitioning and adjusting to the college life experience, and post-graduation employment opportunities; to raise funds for the support of the Center; to manage the appropriated operational budget and the various grants and scholarships awarded to the Center; to engage with the wider military and veterans community at all levels and to raise awareness of UNF military and veteran programs.
1. Create a vision for an inclusive campus environment that addresses the unique needs of military connected students and champions success through retention and graduation, and eventual employment. Maintain UNF’s “Military Friendly School” status, in additional to other military support designations such as but not limited to “Florida Collegiate Purple Star Campus,” “Colleges of Military Support distinction,” and “Best for Vets Colleges.”
2. Develop and manage an advisory board to support the Military and Veterans Resource Center, comprised of committee members from Academic & Student Affairs and key members of the community engaged with veteran issues.
3. Maintain familiarity with state and federal legislation that affects military connected students, veterans and service personnel and families; maintain currency on related student veteran research; and collect and assess vital statistical and financial data relevant to the mission of the Military and Veterans Resource Center.
4. Coordinate with public affairs on media coverage and responses for matters relating to military and veteran students, programs and services.
5. Oversee setting and achieving goals, budgets and long-range planning to support the Military and Veterans Resource Center and related programs.
6. Hire, direct, and supervise the work of assigned staff.
7. Prepare necessary reports, summaries, proposals, contracts, correspondence and all grant reporting requirements. Engage in or conduct surveys and assessments as required.
8. Use data collected from IDMS and other surveys to support strategic efforts and specific programs toward retention and graduation rates of veteran and military connected students.
9. Lead fundraising efforts, in partnership with department resource development officer, to secure appropriate support, scholarships, endowments and other grants to ensure the success of military and veteran student programs and services. Includes all phases of the Veterans Plaza project, ongoing paver sales, memorial bench sponsors and overall naming rights.
10. Develop and oversee educational and therapeutic programs for student veterans, such as art projects and creative writing, in concert with other university units and appropriate outside groups.
11. Be active in community organizations supporting veterans, like the Jacksonville Military and Veterans Coalition and College Network and other non-profits, representing the interests of UNF student veterans.
12. Conduct entrepreneurship training for veterans for both enrolled student veterans and the veteran community at large with funds endowed for that purpose. Explore partnerships with other University units.
13. Mentor and advise the UNF chapter of Student Veterans of America.
14. Coordinate efforts with UNF ROTC to enhance the experience of students working toward a commission in the Army or Navy.

Required Qualifications:
This position requires either (a) Master’s degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and six years of experience directly related to the job functions; (b) Bachelor’s degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and eight years of experience directly related to the job functions; or (c ) 12 years of direct experience.

The ideal candidate will have prior military experience and higher education work experiences; have demonstrated experience in developing new and innovative programs, connected within the local military community, establishing sustained partnership relationships, navigating challenging political environments, and leading within complex organizations. The incumbent will have had progressive leadership and administrative experiences; exceptional writing and oral communications, and familiarity with the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

This position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). This position has been designated as a CSA because it involves significant responsibility for student and campus activities and/or responsibility for campus security. As such, any person in this position must report to the University Police Department a crime or an incident that might be a crime that he/she becomes aware of. This position has a reporting requirement because the University believes that responsibility for students, campus activities and/or campus security will make the holder of this position someone members of the University community will see as an authority figure and someone to whom they can seek help. A CSA is not expected to investigate or determine whether a criminal incident actually took place. A CSA’s responsibility is a duty to report. All positions designated as CSAs are required to complete an online or in-person training session.
