Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
Through ARS, The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill seeks to meet the individual needs of applicants and current students with disabilities and medical conditions as they relate to academics, residences, dining, and co and extra-curricular campus activities. ARS coordinates and implements appropriate reasonable accommodations including academic adjustments and provides appropriate resources and services in accordance with the American with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (504). ARS works with all students including undergraduate and graduate students, full-time and part-time students, students following continuing education courses or who may be auditing and with program applicants. Within the resources available, ARS also functions as a source of information, educational outreach and advice. |

Position Summary |
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station. The Accessibility Coordinator of Accessibility Resources and Service (ARS) is a key professional role within ARS. In collaboration with and oversight of the Associate Director, the Accessibility Coordinator will provide guidance and intervention for students requesting support and connected with ARS in crisis and non-crisis situations through a case-management approach and will collaborate closely with key-campus partners to provide wrap-around, comprehensive interventions. The Accessibility Coordinator will participate in ARS’s accommodation determination process through the implementation of processes and procedures to triage and address requests for accommodations and through participation in the Accommodations and Modifications Consultative Committee. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
* Progressive service (post Bachelor’s or Master’s degree) in a disability/accessibility services program or a Student Affairs functional unit closely aligned to disability services or in an arena serving relevant client populations. * Demonstrated understanding of all relevant legislation (i.e., American Disabilities Act, section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Fair Housing Act and related standards) as it relates to a post-secondary setting; * Knowledge of and familiarity with a wide range of student needs and impacts experienced by students with disabilities and chronic medical conditions and the range of reasonable accommodations, resources and services that may assist with the removal or mitigation of barriers and provide access. * Experience with reviewing and evaluating documentation and use of the interactive process as a means of engaging students, faculty, and staff in the assessment of accommodation requests and the identification of appropriate reasonable accommodations. * Excellent networking, partnership, consensus building skills; proven ability to develop and utilize institutional knowledge to benefit an organizational unit to maximize its influence and positively benefit its stakeholders. * Highly developed intercultural communication skills (written, spoken and presentation) to convey information about difficult topics and issues in a concise, sensitive and objective manner. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
* Experience of serving students and service delivery in a post secondary residential setting. * Experience of consulting with and advising faculty and staff on exploring options to meet student needs and best practice relating to the implementation of reasonable accommodations. * Experience of creating training materials and leading workshops. * Experience of referring concerns to other units and utilizing referral processes/procedures when issues and circumstances dictate it. * Experience in project management and the successful implementation of new initiatives. * Experience in one or more of the following: working with graduate and professional student groups, working with students on the autistic spectrum, accommodated assessment and testing, teaching and learning technologies, program development, physical access and campus provision, universal design principles and implementation, housing accommodation needs, participating in and chairing high stakes and collaborative committees. |

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
