Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The Office of Institutional Integrity and General Counsel (OIIGC) provides an integrated and coordinated approach to the University’s legal, ethical, and compliance requirements, and consists of the following functions: Legal Affairs and Governance, Compliance and Policy, Title IX Compliance, and Internal Audit. The OIIGC is responsible for providing legal advice to UNC Greensboro’s Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, officers, and other administrators of UNC Greensboro when they are acting on behalf of the University; serves as a strategic partner in the development and implementation of the University policy, procedures and initiatives; assures legal and ethical compliance with all relevant federal, state and local laws and regulations; and provides timely collaborative legal advice at the earliest possible opportunity. The OIIGC provides advice on a broad spectrum of issues, including but not limited to contracts, federal and state regulations, due process matters, campus security, NCAA rules, equal employment and personnel laws, ADA/504, University and UNC System policies, financial aid, open meetings laws, FERPA, HIPAA, the Identity Theft Protection Act, Public Records Act, etc. The OIIGC works closely with the NC Attorney General’s Office on litigation involving the University in federal and state courts and in actions pending before state and federal administrative agencies (i.e., EEOC, Dept of Education Office for Civil Rights, and NC Office of Administrative Hearings).
Position Summary:
The paralegal works with OIIGC staff attorneys and their clients throughout the University in support of the legal, policy, and compliance functions of the OIIGC. The paralegal serves as the Public Records Officer, the main point of contact for campus constituents and the general public, with responsibility for reviewing, tracking, and oftentimes responding, to records requests. Substantive legal work performed under the supervision of the General Counsel, the Deputy General Counsel, and other OIIGC staff attorneys may include the preparation and review of various governance, policy, and regulatory documents; and the preparation, review, and negotiation of complex legal documents (primarily contracts relating to purchase of goods and services, and instructional agreements). In addition, the paralegal independently manages cases and provides litigation support, including responding to discovery requests and interfacing with both OIIGC staff attorneys and clients, as well as opposing counsel.
Other duties may include initial legal research; preparation of releases; proofreading legal documents for substance; researching complex legal and/or ethical issues and/or university policies and records.
Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited paralegal program; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates:
Completion of an accredited paralegal program*; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
* Accreditation may be from the American Bar Association or other recognized organization.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in a paralegal capacity for a public or private university, at a state agency, or a law firm with a specialized Higher Education practice group
