Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
SABI’s mission is to serve as a key resource to support the school’s core mission and strategic initiatives. SABI provides substantive, accurate, and understandable data, information, and services to 23 internal (including 8 academic departments and multiple central administrative units or CAUs) and external stakeholders (ASPPH, CEPH, Provost’s office, etc.) to support strategic planning, evaluation, and decision-making across the school. This includes collaboratively guiding and advising on development and implementation of the school-wide evaluation plan, data collection and reporting; regular reporting on Gillings School benchmarks and metrics; projections and exploratory analyses on topics of interest or concern; staying abreast of trends in higher education to better understand, and advise on, data and analysis needs; adhesion to external reporting requirements; support and advising on school data collection and reporting; contributions to the work of non-school constituents; and routine and ad hoc data sharing through appropriate means to support and inform standard reporting, assessment, decision-making, and strategic planning efforts.
Position Summary:
The principal business intelligence developer is responsible for advanced institutional research business intelligence, business analysis, and systems analyst expertise in support of the Gillings School of Global Public Health. This position is responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining business intelligence, data visualization and other analytics solutions to ensure data-informed decision making, promote efficiencies, and achieve the school’s mission and objectives. This position will report directly to the Assistant Dean for Strategic Analysis and Business Intelligence and will work closely with Instructional and the Information Systems (IIS) unit to develop and implement a shared strategy for use of data. This position will function with a high degree of independence and decision-making consistent with the collaboration and partnership needed to successfully meet and exceed business intelligence goals and objectives.
Duties include: (a) preparing and analyzing data inquiries and reporting requirements needed for student success as well as for operational and business decisions; (b) creating reports to support strategic planning, evaluation and decision-making and to monitor compliance and regulatory requirements across the school;© developing and analyzing requirements for annual accreditation reports and external stakeholders; (d) leading projects to test and implement new business processes around data needs and reports; (e) developing and providing communication to department representatives, chairs, and leaders; (f) serving as technical expert/liaison to school and main campus entities regarding development and implementation of data systems; and (g) providing data analysis, reports generation, survey development and reporting, business intelligence consulting, and strategic planning for continuous improvement.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Master’s and 1-2 years’ experience; or Bachelors and 2-4 years’ experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
-Technical Knowledge: Extensive knowledge and skill at the highest technical level of database and applications systems analysis and programming. Detailed understanding of technical issues to design database architectures for stable technologies.
-Technical Solution Development: Substantial knowledge of computer equipment capacity and limitations to devise or modify procedures to solve complex problems. Detailed knowledge of design, programming and reporting tools used in complex data environments, and ability to support development of sophisticated database and data mart solutions.
-Technical Support: Extensive ability to solve problems of very high complexity and serve as a key resource to others.
-Planning & Organizing: Ability to plan and organize day-to-day work and adapt workload, if necessary, due to unanticipated changes.
-Project Management: Ability to lead complex projects involving multiple staff across specialty areas.
Consulting: Translates market and industry trends to communicate and provide consultation on issues and requests from clients that require the implementation or creation of a custom solution.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
Preferred candidate will have the following:
– Bachelor’s degree and six years of experience in information technology field; master’s and four years of experience; or a combination of education and experience equal to ten years.
– Minimum of six years working with programming and statistical software (SAS, SQL, R, Python, etc.). Individual can demonstrate experience and confidence in independently extracting, manipulating, analyzing, interpreting, and documenting large, complex data sets.
– SAS certification is a plus.
– Six years use of business intelligence reporting environment (Tableau preferred, SAS VA, OBIEE, Business Objects, other), writing reports and measuring key performance indicators.
– Six years of experience with querying data systems.
– Knowledge of higher education data and systems including survey development.
