The University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine announces an outstanding opportunity for 1 non-tenure track (contract track) full time (100% appointment) faculty position in Comparative Ophthalmology at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Rank will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
Successful candidates will have the opportunity to help build upon the rich foundation of our ophthalmology program and co-develop an ophthalmology internship and residency program to augment and advance the clinical, research and teaching components of the program. This candidate will join an already established Ophthalmology Service with a fellow board-certified ophthalmologist. The appointee will participate in clinical service and clinical teaching (50-75% time) with the remaining 25-50% effort split principally between didactic teaching and scholarly activities. Specific effort allocations are negotiable and will depend on the candidate’s interests and expertise as well as the needs of the hospital and department. Clinical service includes provision of state-of-the-art ophthalmologic care to patients originating from the small animal hospital, the Piper Equine Hospital, and the Large Animal Hospital. It will also encompass providing consultation to over 50 veterinarian colleagues within the Veterinary Medical Center as well as to community veterinarians. Brand-new equipment has been acquired within the year including new slit lamps, indirect ophthalmoscopy headsets, a fundic camera, b-mode and ultrasound biomicroscopy, phacoemulsification unit, and an endolaser unit with probes. There will also be opportunities to work with avian and other exotic animals at the University of Minnesota Raptor Center and Como Park Zoo. Teaching includes participation in the didactic, laboratory and clinical instruction of DVM students, interns, and residents, provision of training programs for ophthalmology technicians, and providing continuing education to practicing veterinarians. Creative scholarship that contributes to the generation of new knowledge through primary or collaborative efforts is desired and encouraged.
At the University of Minnesota and within the College of Veterinary Medicine, career and professional development opportunities are exceptional and include mentorship programs, promotional pathways, continuing professional education funding and dedicated hours (10 days) to take advantage of our resources to advance and expand your career.
Starting date is negotiable based upon the availability of the successful applicant and program needs. Review of applications (including letters of reference) begins immediately and continues until a suitable candidate is identified.
Candidates must have a DVM/VMD or equivalent foreign degree and either American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) or European College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ECVO) board certification or ACVO or ECVO board eligibility by the start date. Time to study for the board exam can be negotiated. The successful candidate must be eligible for Minnesota state veterinary licensure. The candidate must be committed to academia, dedicated to contributing to a high quality clinical and teaching service, and able to demonstrate outstanding clinical and interpersonal skills and ability to work with others in a collegial team environment. The candidate’s interest and potential to help expand the ophthalmology service and develop a residency program is imperative.
