General Summary of Position:
The University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks an Executive Director for its String Project, a vanguard music education and community engagement initiative housed in the Department of Music that provides music instruction to K-12 students from the Merrimack Valley. Duties include leadership of the program; significant recruitment, outreach, and fundraising; coordination with Lowell Public Schools; mentorship of Community Music graduate and Music Business undergraduate students; and supervision of Master Teachers and UML Student Teaching Artists. This is a part-time position; qualified applicants may be offered additional teaching opportunities in applied violin and viola, conducting, and leadership of the university orchestra.
About the String Project:
For over twenty years, the UML String Project has played an integral role in the community of Lowell. The program is a cultural gem, restoring a vital music education component to the Lowell Public Schools. Through the study of music, String Project participants engage in self-expression and creative and critical thinking. They develop communication skills through listening to one another and they forge relationships with teachers and peers that encourage personal growth and positive thinking. UMLSP participants learn that music builds community through making music together and performing for one another. This experience is essential to university students, children, and families, many of whom dedicate several years to String Project, and many also decide to study at UML because of that participation.
The String Project is a member of the National String Project Consortium, which is composed of over 40 other String Projects located at major universities around the country.
