General Summary: The Director of Advisor Development & Advising Resources advances the University’s commitment to holistic student success, develops systems for aligned and coordinated academic advising on campus, and supports major student success initiatives within the Student Equity, Access, and Success (SEAS) unit. The incumbent will play a critical role in promoting student success and ensuring that faculty and professional advisors, academic coaches, peer educators/mentors, and student-facing staff across campus have the support they need to advise, coach, and mentor students in a way that is asset-based and values students’ cultural, racial, gender, social class, ability, linguistic, and experiential diversity. The Director will develop advising resources related to advisor onboarding, professional development, and training, as well as creating a campus-wide advising online sitemap and hub for students and campus partners. The Director reports to the Assistant Vice Provost for Student Equity, Access, and Success (SEAS).Examples of Duties: Develop and oversee a university-wide academic advising development program and resource center for professional and faculty advisors, and academic coaches, including but not limited to:

  • Advising Foundations’ curriculum on University systems (WISER, Degree Audit, Salesforce, etc.), strengths-based advising approaches, and orientation and registration processes and procedures.
  • Self-directed print and video advisor training modules.
  • Collaborate with the directors of offices that do advising and academic coaching to ensure that training meets their needs and complements their office/program-specific training.
  • Archive of research and resources on effective advising practices for UMB students, including specific student populations.
  • Collaborate with the Advising Operations and Technology Specialist to support increased use of Advising Case Management (ACM) including developing guidance documents for advisors, and training.
  • Onboarding and regular professional development training as well as a menu of advising support offerings for faculty and staff.
  • Develop a standing menu of monthly professional development workshops for advisors, academic coaches, and mentors; invite advisors, staff, and guests to present as part of the advising development program.
  • Build and maintain a student-facing, centralized, campus-wide Academic Advising webpage to provide transparent and easy-to-navigate advising information, and which links out to every office that provides advising, coaching, and mentoring to students; link advising resources to this page in a way that is accessible to faculty and professional advisors, academic coaches, mentors, and other student-facing staff.
  • Create a comprehensive onboarding process for new academic advisors.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Faculty Development and/or college dean’s and advising offices on faculty advising related issues and projects.
  • Serve as a consultant to SEAS departments on advising foundations, including but not limited to Pre-collegiate Programs, Multilingual and Pathway Programs, ACES, SSS/Success Boston.
  • Serve as a member of the Advising Leadership Council to address shared concerns or issues related to campus wide-advising policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of a comprehensive and intentional assessment plan for campus-wide advising focused on outcomes and a process for measuring outcomes.
  • Support Academic Advising and Student Success departments campus-wide, including but not limited to: Vacant SEAS 07/2023 DocuSign Envelope ID: 2B59EC4B-AE32-4FD9-867A-135CACDC9CAA 1/8/2024.
  • Recruiting, training and supervising peer advisors.
  • · Creating and distributing internal and external advising planning documents (drop-in schedules; advising logistical calendar; virtual meetings links and instructions; campus-wide advising directory, etc.).
  • Coordinating administrative hold removal event logistics in collaboration with Enrollment Management.
  • Partner with the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE), the Ross Center, the colleges, learning communities, and seminars to develop and implement a peer education/mentoring on-boarding and development program for all peer mentors and educators.

    • Qualifications: Master’s Degree in higher education, counseling, student personnel administration, student development and advising, instructional support, or a closely related discipline, and a minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of professional leadership experience in advising, academic support, or student service program administration required. Experience in an urban, public research university preferred.

  • Knowledge of or proven ability to learn current academic student development, retention and student success theory, research, and practice with a focus on critical scholarship.
  • Strong commitment to anti-racist and health promoting values and to closing equity gaps for our diverse study body.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with program development and management.
  • Knowledge of or proven ability to interpret and utilize data from institutional or external sources for the purpose of implementing equity-based programming.
  • Knowledge of and experience with webpage learning portals, CRMs, and/or enterprise software.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with deans, faculty, student services and student life professionals, and other key constituents.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, presentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and creatively.
  • Strong leadership and team building skills.
  • Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
