Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Department of Art at the University of Maryland invites applications for a tenure-track
Assistant Professor position in Critical Studies. We seek a candidate engaged in the investigation and invention of new knowledge and
research relating to contemporary issues and practices within the academic field of contemporary art theory and practice who can apply their
research toward the development of a modern art theory and art practice curriculum within a major research institution.
Critical Studies is defined in this context as the confluence of art theory and artistic creation, weaving together diverse
interdisciplinary perspectives from cultural, social, political, and philosophical realms. We particularly encourage candidates familiar
with sub-disciplines within Critical Studies, such as (but not limited to) intersections of gender, race, sexuality, ethnicity, nationality,
ability and other inequalities, as well as environmental art, and arts-centered activism. This role is ideally suited to MFA-qualified
artists adept at synthesizing theory with practice, and PhD-trained scholars with experience in arts-based research and theoretical
discourse within the arts.
