The University of Lynchburg, a private regional university, located in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia is seeking a regular part time University Counselor to join our Counseling Services team.
The University Counselor reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Director or Assistant Director of Counseling Services (dependent on licensure status). The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing and will be carried out by the supervisor. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior.

Job Purpose:
- To assist the Counseling Services team in providing individual, couple, and group mental health counseling as a part of the services of the Counseling Center.
Specific Job Duties:
- Provides individual, group and/or couples counseling for full-time undergraduate and Access students. Provides aftercare for students who have been hospitalized for mental health issues. Makes referrals to outside counselors and psychiatrists as needed.
- Provides group counseling for support and therapy groups as needed.
- Provides mental health presentations on campus as requested when time permits.
- Provides emergency mental health and crisis-intervention services, such as an on-campus emergency, assessment for potential suicide or homicidal threat, and facilitate further evaluation at Lynchburg General Hospital Emergency Room, or hospitalization when appropriate at Virginia Baptist Hospital through psychiatrist.
- Works collaboratively with offices within Student Development on programs and department initiatives.
- Provide linkage with other departments for referrals and consultation as appropriate within ethical guidelines.
- Maintain record of each student who enters counseling, including assessments, Releases of Information, presenting issues, family history, health, progress, planning for counseling, and other issues as related.
- Participate in counselor-on-call rotation.
- Performs any other related duties as may be required.

Schedule:
- 8:30 am – 5:00 pm (7.5 hours/day with some evening and weekends to meet needs of department may be required)
Experience/Skills:
- Ability to communicate effectively and have the ability to understand, comprehend and follow directions
- Must have good teamwork skills
- Experience providing individual and group counseling
- Experience with college-age population preferred
- Demonstrated proficiency in delivering Telehealth services
- Ability to remain on call for after hours emergencies as scheduled
- Strong analytical skills
- Ability to manage the fast-paced environment of meeting the mental health needs of the students and community
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of students
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Previous experience with use of electronic record system
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and/or a commitment to diversity and inclusion
Required Qualifications:
- Must be license eligible in the State of Virginia
Preferred qualifications:
- Virginia licensure in counseling or social work preferred
Education:
- Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling, Social Work or related field required
