Assistant/Associate Professor Landscape Ecologies
Department of Landscape Architecture
The Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign invites applications for a full-time, tenure-stream position in Landscape Ecologies. Appointment at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Processor will be considered based on each candidate’s record of accomplishments in research, teaching, and/or practice. The salary for this position will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full benefits-eligible position. The expected start date is August 16, 2024.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will undertake innovative research in ecological systems, ecological design, and/or landscape ecology in relation to contemporary concerns regarding climate change, urbanization/industrialization, and/or reparative justice. They will teach core and elective studio-based, technical, and lecture/seminar-format courses in our BLA and MLA professional programs as well as our recently established MSUD program and, when qualified, our Ph.D. in Landscape Architecture program. Supervision of student research and appropriate levels of faculty service are also part of the position. The successful applicant will join other faculty members in fulfilling our Department’s newly revised mission statement and broader college and university missions with a focus on diversity, equity, sustainability, and justice.
Qualifications
Requirements include a terminal degree (e.g., master-level, Ph.D., D.Des.) in Landscape Architecture or a related field. Depending on the rank sought, applicants should demonstrate an outstanding record of scholarship and teaching in the areas of ecological systems, ecological design, and/or landscape ecologies or clear promise to build such a record.
Additional preferred qualifications include 1) knowledge of contemporary theories of ecosystem ecology and experience with innovative practices of ecological design, particularly in relation to contemporary issues of climate and environmental justice; 2) technical design knowledge of soils, plants, geology, hydrology, biodiversity, climate, biomes, and/or geo-spatial mapping of ecological systems with interest in urban, rural, industrial, and/or community contexts; 3) interest and experience in interdisciplinary, collaborative, and inclusive research practices that evolve the intersections between ecological science, environmental humanities, and design; 4) practical experience conducting site fieldwork, site monitoring, landscape experiments, community initiatives, and other field-based research or engagement methods; and/or 5) demonstrated interest in advancing design research and teaching in areas such as climate change adaptation and mitigation, landscape regeneration, ecosystem accounting and landscape performance, ecological materialism, Indigenous/traditional ecological knowledge, biodiversity, forestry, ruralism and agroecology, plants systems and relations, non-human species and relationships, and/or ecological justice.
Institutional Context
Faculty members in the Department of Landscape Architecture have access to the incredible resources and facilities of the College of Fine & Applied Arts and the interdisciplinary research campus of the University of Illinois. These include the Siebel Center for Design, the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities, the Center for Advanced Study, the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, the Unit for Criticism, and numerous other specialized centers. The university also comprises many interdisciplinary academic units in which Landscape Architecture faculty hold appointments and responsibilities, and faculty members from other units hold affiliate appointments in Landscape Architecture. Units connected with Landscape Architecture in that way include American Indian Studies; Anthropology; Architecture; Art and Design; Dance; Education; History, Medieval Studies; Recreation, Sport, and Tourism; Spanish and Portuguese Studies; and Women and Gender in Global Perspectives. Additional collaborative opportunities within the College include the Krannert Museum of Art, the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, and Japan House, each a respected international hub for innovative scholarship and public engagement.
