UH-Hilo, position number 84717, Māhele Haʻawina Hawaiʻi, Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikōlani College, full-time, 11-month, tenure-track, to begin
approximately July 2024, pending position clearance and availability of funding.

Research that is
responsive to the needs of Indigenous language revitalization, especially among Native Americans as defined in the Native American Languages
Act of 1990, and the use of schooling through such languages as a crucial component of language revitalization will be reviewed favorably by
the search committee.
Duties and Responsibilities
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses. Supervise
independent study activities and off campus learning such as practicums and internships. Participate on committees in charge of candidates
for advanced degrees, including the doctorate. Serve as chair or member of committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees,
including the doctorate. Serve as academic advisor to undergraduate and graduate students. Participate in department, university, and
community service. Serve as department chair when selected. Develop teaching resources/materials. Maintain Hawaiian as the operational
language of the college.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in Linguistics, Native Languages, or other related
fields. Minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent, with evidence of
increasing professional maturity. Demonstrated ability as a teacher of applied Indigenous linguistics and/or Indigenous education at the
undergraduate and graduate levels. Demonstrated scholarly achievement. Familiarity with the College’s posted teaching philosophy and
ability to operate within it. Demonstrated ability to work well within the context of the unique mission of the College and the large range
of communities with which it interacts. Demonstrated appropriate proficiency in oral and written Hawaiian or a Ph.D. in Indigenous
Linguistics, or Indigenous Education or a related field. Strong background in an endangered Native American language other than Hawaiian.
Demonstrated commitment to increase one’s existing proficiency in Hawaiian. Evidence of teaching proficiency at the undergraduate and
graduate levels, to include class delivery both in person and on-line. Scholarly achievement judged competent and adequate for the rank in
comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities. Continued evidence of participation in the scholarly and
academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization, or in other
appropriate job-related service activities. Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities, including the supervision of work
of assistants when appropriate and the development and publishing of materials written in Indigenous languages. Considerable experience in
working with Native American students from a variety of cultural groups and backgrounds.
