Department Description
Amend at UCSF was founded by Dr. Brie Williams, Professor of Medicine at UCSF as a research and training program that designs and delivers training, education, and advocacy and conducts health and health services research to develop and advance a health-first vision of the prison system transformation in the United States. Based on evidence developed in the course of program implementation and evaluation, alongside independent research, Amend engages prison partners in the U.S. to achieve significant policy reform, retrain staff, and elevate the voices of incarcerated people and other directly impacted communities in pursuit of a transformed societal response to crime and approach to incarceration. In addition, Amend serves as a technical support provider and research consultant to criminal justice organizations – primarily U.S. jails and prisons – working to improve the quality, safety, and reach of health care services in their institutions. Through its growing roster of national and international partners, Amend is leading the way in defining alternative, health, and human rights-focused harm reduction strategies inside US prisons that are better for both incarcerated people and prison staff. In its role as a leading organization in this work, Amend is increasingly engaged in public communication and advocacy efforts and seeking new, creative approaches to change the public conversation on crime, criminal justice, and public health in America.
