Public Programmer
University of California Los Angeles
Requisition Number: 40971
Salary: $5,400 – $11,467 Monthly
Position Description:
Under the general direction of the Director, Film and Television Archive, the Public Programmer co-curates and co-manages all aspects of original Public Programs at multiple sites including related activities of fundraising, research, and program development, promotion, and presentation. The Public Programmer curates films for screenings, writes insightful grammatically and historically accurate program notes to contextualize works, introduces films and interviews filmmakers at various assigned public events, organizes technical rehearsals; and provides input to the design, editing, production and distribution of brochures and publications relating to the exhibition of programs. For the Archive’s slate of programming, the Public Programmer is responsible for administrative duties, including overseeing rights clearances and coordination with distributors, and print trafficking. As a member of the staff team, the Public Programmer will also contribute to Archive team planning, projects, committees, and initiatives on an as-needed basis.
The Archive asserts that equitable and diverse representation is fundamental to its work in acquisitions, cataloging and preservation, and in providing access to collection materials through curation, public exhibition and research initiatives. As a caretaker of these documents, the Archive is responsible for increasing cultural competency by putting into historical context materials that may represent biases and discriminatory viewpoints, themes and depictions. In keeping with this mission, the Public Programmer will build connections with partners and communities to deepen collaborative relationships, meeting the needs of the students, scholars, and public served by the Archive.
UCLA Film & Television Archive, a department of the UCLA Library, collects moving images as works of art and as social and historical documents, restores and preserves moving images for current and future generations, curates collections, programs and events using moving images to advance knowledge, and provides access to moving images for purposes of research, education and enjoyment. The Archive’s collections consist of over 500,000 holdings dating from the dawn of cinema to the present and cover a broad-spectrum of content from major Hollywood studios films and network television shows to independent productions and news footage.
The Public Programs unit of the Film & Television Archive conceptualizes live and virtual cinema programs for both in-theater exhibition and virtual screening platforms in a year-round capacity. Public Programs coordinates an on-going calendar of screening events of contemporary, historical and archival films curated from various sources, including the Archive’s collections as well as local and international studios and independent film archives and contemporary international distributors. Public Programs is responsible for programs from ideation through research, funding and execution and works closely with the Motion Picture and Television Offices, Research and Study Center, and Library Communications and Marketing to fulfill the Archive’s mission to advocate for the accessibility of all moving images in all formats.
