Housing Affordability Postdoctoral Scholar, Lewis Center
University of California Los Angeles
Requisition Number: JPF09185
Applications are sought for a full-time Postdoctoral Scholar on California’s housing policy and land use reform. The successful candidate will work as part of a research team led by Drs Michael Lens, Michael Manville, Paavo Monkkonen, and Jose Loya in the Department of Urban Planning, including Shane Phillips, who manages the Lewis Center Housing Initiative.
The scholar’s primary role will be to design and implement an evaluation of California’s accessory dwelling unit (ADU) laws on ADU production, housing prices and rents, and land values. This two-year project is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to study the impact of pro-housing reforms. It will be one of the first studies to test the hypothesis that “broad upzoning” can increase housing capacity and production without substantially increasing land values.
The above will account for about 50% of the appointment. Approximately 25% of the successful applicant’s appointment will support research into upstream determinants of homelessness, primarily in Los Angeles County, and the remaining 25% of time will be available for their own research. In addition to salary, the Lewis Center will provide the scholar with $3,000 to attend academic or professional conferences.
Applications are open to all qualified candidates, but we especially encourage applications from women, gender minorities, people of color, and other backgrounds underrepresented in the housing and land use field. Applicants able to work on the UCLA campus are preferred.
