Position Description:
The Executive Director of Research Administration (EDRA) has overall supervision, management and strategic planning responsibilities for the entire division’s research programs and administration in excess of $80 million annually. The EDRA supervises a team that is responsible for pre-award and post-award contract and grant materials in the Division of Life Sciences, which is composed of 7 academic departments, 7 interdepartmental degree programs, 3 institutes, and 9 centers. Incumbent is jointly responsible for managing efficacy of the divisions fund management teams, which is to include training, development, recruitment, and retention. This includes oversight of departmental contracts and grants offices for the entire Division of Life Sciences and its staff that supports sponsored research. The EDRA is expected to be an expert in Federal, State, and Private contracts, grants, and gift policy. The incumbent must keep apprised and be able to administer all of the
latest in federal and state granting agency guidelines and ensure the division is both in compliance and thriving. Incumbent is expected to keep close contacts with administrators in federal, state, and private agencies, such as NIH, NSF, DOD, HHMI, etc. The EDRA is the Life Sciences liaison with senior leaders in the Office of Research and Creative Activities and directly manages and administers the roll out and maintenance of research related policy as implemented by that office.
Incumbent also works directly with faculty Chairs, departments CAOs, and department CFOs. The EDRA oversees the full cycle accounting and reporting of extramural activity and monitors the payroll and HR administration as well. The EDRA is also responsible for extramural and intramural grants and research programs that cut across department, school, or campus jurisdictional lines where Life Sciences plays a leading role, e.g. Howard Hughes Medical Initiative, Advancing Faculty Diversity Grants, etc. Extramural sponsored projects include UCLA multi-org/multi-department/sub-awards with non-UC institutions, multi-million dollar program projects, disease team awards, etc.
The EDRA provides guidance to divisional and department leadership on complex project/proposal budgets, oversight of faculty compensation plan salaries, and manages the Negotiated Salary Trial Program (NSTP) for the entire College of Letters & Sciences. The EDRA is expected to be an expert at NSTP. The EDRA is responsible for the Life Sciences fund management intern program and trains interns along with career staff, through this program, on pre and post award processes. The EDRA plays a critical role in maintaining a highly efficient and supportive environment for the conduct of research projects, promoting teamwork within the Division and establishing positive working relationships with other University departments and outside agencies, DGSOM, College of Letters & Science, Office of Research Administration, Business and Finance Solutions, Federal, State, and private research sponsoring agencies. The EDRA is responsible for ensuring all departments within the Division of Life Sciences remain in compliance with University and funding agency policies, procedures, terms and conditions. The EDRA is to work to develop and maintain an innovative research administration process and infrastructure across the Division of Life Sciences as well as make long range plans and plan out resource allocations.
