Position Description:
The Introduction to Data Science (IDS) Program, a project in the UCLA Statistics Department, is a pioneer in the Data Science for All education movement. IDS, a leading national provider of high school data science education materials, professional development (PD), and technology support, seeks a K-12 Data Science Curriculum and PD Developer to assist in developing middle school data science curriculum and professional development for implementing teachers. Under the general direction of the IDS project leadership, the Data Science Curriculum and PD Developer’s primary responsibilities include the following: 1) Develop, test, and revise high quality and timely curriculum and training products for K-12 teachers with an emphasis on grades 6-8; 2) Work closely with other project curriculum developers, trainers, and the training team to meet training deliverables and goals; 3) Write clear lessons and other curricular materials for teacher implementation, with a content focus on data science across various disciplines (e.g., science, history, English language arts, etc.).
The Data Science Curriculum and PD Developer helps design curriculum for the PD and for use in the classroom of participating teachers. The development of these materials aligns with the goals and vision of the IDS project, addresses the needs of teachers, school districts, and UCLA, and aligns to state and national standards. Major responsibilities include designing and implementing middle school curriculum and professional development, developing scopes of work, establishing timelines and milestones, testing curriculum and professional development models, monitoring of and reporting on deliverables, identifying and adapting to unanticipated issues, and ensuring effective communication to the IDS team and participants.
Incumbent serves as a critical thought partner in the development of curriculum, pedagogy, and innovations in K-12 data science education; must understand the needs of novice and experienced K-12 teachers; and successfully writes curriculum that is clear to implement by teachers nationally and internationally.
The Developer independently prioritizes and completes ongoing tasks in accordance with established department guidelines and university policies. Other assignments are made and reviewed by IDS Director, Assistant or Associate Director, and Faculty Advisor on an ongoing basis.
Special Instructions:
This position is a contract position for one year of employment. Upon satisfactory review, the position can be renewed annually up to four years of employment.
