Position description
The Fox Laboratory research goals and objectives are to understand the neurobiology of emotion, which the Fox lab uses a variety of techniques and across several species, including nonhuman primates. The Fox lab maintains a highly supportive and collaborative environment, prioritizing the well-being of its members.
The California National Primate Research Center, CNPRC at UC Davis, is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health problems where non-human primates are the animal of choice. In addition to its major efforts in research, the CNPRC is also committed to both UC Davis and NIH missions of teaching and service
NATURE AND PURPOSE
The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.
I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS ( 90% EFFORT)
A. Research activity (70%)
This position requires creative contributions and collaborative development of an active research program in primate neuroscience. The candidate will help determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator. They will design specific projects, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques. The candidate will participate in the supervision of students and technicians regarding the technical aspects of research, including methods development, troubleshooting problems, interpreting results, and planning experiments.
B. Publication (10%)
The candidate will contribute to the publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals, books and other outlets in collaboration with the PI and/or other members of the research team.
C. Grant Acquisition (10%)
The candidate will assist in acquiring funding from public and private funding organizations. The candidate will assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies. The candidate will interact with funding agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY ( 5% EFFORT)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to his/her specific field and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups. When appropriate, this could also include presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE ( 5% EFFORT)
The incumbent will engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing, student laboratory sessions, and committee service. The incumbent will work at the national level on science innovation, policy, and promoting outreach and science education access to underrepresented groups. Teaching full classroom courses is not an expectation of this position. The candidate will also engage in public outreach activities that include presenting scientific research results to the public and providing relevant advice to individuals or public agencies.

Qualifications
The basic qualification for this position is a PhD in Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Biological Sciences, Psychology, or equivalent doctoral degree.
* Extensive experience working with nonhuman primates in a research setting.
* Experience handling and training nonhuman primates for neuroscience research.
* Experience with neurosurgical procedures for nonhuman primate neuroscience research.
* Extensive experience and knowledge of laboratory safety and animal care protocols in research settings.
* Experience working with and coordinating large teams of researchers to achieve a common goal.
* Interpersonal and communication skills to interact professionally with a diverse group of people, including but not limited to investigators, visitors, veterinarians, students, and staff.
* Experiences performing histological analyses in primate brain tissue.
* Experience collecting, curating, and managing large datasets for neuroscience research.
* Experience designing experiments for nonhuman primate behavioral/neuroscience research.
* Experience with methods and approaches for invasive and noninvasive nonhuman primate neuroscience studies, such as EEG, MRI, calcium imaging, and/or electrophysiological recordings.
* An established track record of productive participation in primate neuroscience research.
* Experience working with and mentoring staff and students in a supervisory role.
* Experience acquiring funding from public and private funding organizations.
* Expertise in computational approaches for designing experiments and modeling primate behavior.
* Experience developing procedures, protocols, and tools for behavioral experimentation in nonhuman primates.
* Experience developing nonhuman primate models of psychiatric, neurological, or neurodevelopmental disorders.
* A strong knowledge of computerized approaches to identify and track primate behavior.
* A strong understanding of virally-mediated approaches for delivering genetically-encoded cargo for neuroscience research.
