Departmental Overview
The California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences at UC Berkeley (QB3- Berkeley) harnesses the quantitative sciences of physics and engineering to unify our understanding of biological systems at all levels of complexity, from atoms and molecules to cells, tissues, and entire living organisms.

Responsibilities
Reporting directly to the PIs, Professors Aaron Streets and Sanjay Kumar, and supervising a team of undergraduate assistants, the incumbent will be involved in operational management of both laboratories, including: placing and tracking orders; organization and maintenance of the lab inventory; organizing and maintaining instrument warranty documentation; manuals, service records, etc., ensuring common supplies are stocked; performing routine lab-wide quality control tests (i.e. mycoplasma, cell line authentication); situating and training new lab members in basic lab safety and protocols; managing lab member departures; coordinating routine equipment maintenance; serving as the laboratory safety officer and assuming responsibility for developing safety protocols, understanding lab hazards, enforcing safety rules and maintaining safety/training records; performing training/orientation on routine lab procedures, especially in molecular and cell biology; maintaining/updating animal protocols, organizing animal protocol projects, training lab members in animal care and protocols, and executing in vivo research projects; updating and maintaining lab-wide plasmid and cell inventories. The incumbent will also serve as a point of contact to various research support offices on campus (e.g. EHS, Stanley Hall building management, OLAC) and as a point of contact for facilities off-campus (i.e. Addgene, collaborating labs, quality control services). The incumbent will also maintain updates, postings, and design of the official laboratory websites. The incumbent’s responsibilities may also include research support activities, with the level of independence of these contributions to be determined by time and interest, and at the discretion of the PIs.
- Conduct animal research projects, either independently or in collaboration with other laboratory members (at PI’s discretion).
- Serve as laboratory safety officer and point of contact with EHS.
- Assist the PI and EHS in ensuring compliance with lab safety protocols. Assist with providing training and keep records to ensure proper chemical safety procedures are maintained. Advise researchers on safety protocols.
- Ensure compliance with all other occupational safety-related rules, including enforcing rules, preparing the laboratory for inspections, and managing proper waste disposal.
- Supply chain management of supplies and reagents shared by researchers within the laboratory. Establish acceptable levels of supplies and reagents and ensure these are met. Supervise undergraduate lab assistants’ inventory, stocking, and organization of supplies and reagents.
- Purchasing of supplies and reagents. Review cost estimates, place orders, cross-reference and coordinate complex purchasing paperwork and invoices. Track and trouble-shoot deliveries of supplies. Coordinate other administrative tasks for the laboratory as needed.
- Maintain lab reagent/supply inventory.
- Hire and train student lab assistants in routine laboratory maintenance protocols.
- Preparing and organizing materials, protocols, and data of departing lab members.
- Situating and training new lab members.
- Assist PI in maintenance of laboratory computing resources, including coordinating software purchases and updates, hardware maintenance, and campus network compliance.
- Maintain and update official lab website.
- Maintain lab’s social media accounts.
- Maintain communications with off-campus services and collaborating laboratories.
- Organize and manage lab meeting schedules.
- Provide routine research support to laboratory members in the fields of molecular and cell biology, biomaterials science, and biomechanics.
- Update animal protocols and train new lab members in animal care and research.
- Maintain standard laboratory equipment and coordinate as needed service of advanced equipment.
- Maintain standard operating procedures for equipment use.
- Performing routine quality control tests for the lab.
- Maintain controlled substances inventory.
Required Qualifications
- Familiarity with experimental life sciences laboratory supplies and reagents.
- Experience in an academic research environment.
- Familiarity with standard software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPress).
- Must pass a background check for controlled substances authorization.
- Ability to handle fluctuating priorities and deadlines
- Organized, responsible, with close attention to detail.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- B.S. (or equivalent) in biology, chemistry, bioengineering, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in animal research is a plus.
- Familiarity with experimental methods in molecular and cell biology, including recombinant DNA techniques (e.g. cloning) and optical microscopy.
- Experience managing computational infrastructure, data storage/access, website maintenance.
- Experience managing undergraduate assistants.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $24.65 – $30.21
- This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Technical Unit (TX) between the University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE).
