Departmental Overview
The Master of Computational Social Science (MaCSS) is a one-year, on-campus program that will provide students with practical skills for analyzing, interpreting, and visualizing social data. Social data are simply data about people, groups, organizations, and their interactions from surveys and censuses, company websites, store loyalty cards, cell-phone records, Twitter posts, internet searches, etc. MaCSS graduates will be able to work as analysts and data specialists in business, non-profit, and government settings.
Administratively, the MaCSS program will be housed in the Interdisciplinary Social Science Programs in the College of Letters and Science. It will be overseen by a Faculty Director, an Executive Director, and a Graduate Group. They will be assisted by a Graduate Student Affairs Officer (GSAO) and two staff who focus on career development and placement.
Position Summary
The Executive Director (ED) of the Master of Computational Social Sciences (MaCSS) Program will work with the Faculty Director to achieve the program’s goals, identify new goals as new information and new challenges arise, develop tactics to achieve those goals, and establish policies to put those tactics to work. The ED will collaborate with the Faculty Director and the Graduate Group on logistics to foster the growth of the program and the success (academic & career) of the students.
General management includes long and short-range strategic planning, as well as recommending programmatic and policy changes as necessary. Administrative activities include those related to finance, human resources, academic personnel, external relations, instruction/course support, facilities, and student services.

Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $110,000 – $150,000.00.
